I use a waterproof terry towelling washable mattress protector that has replaced a much more uncomfortable vinyl one. I am not sure what the waterproof layer is but it works well. What took a while to source was a good waterproof duvet cover - pee goes up as well as down.

Yes this can be a pain when the duvet gets wet luckily I have a washable one.

Thick plastic sheets seem to work the best.
