My brother owns my home where I live, and I get daily care through an agency. I asked my aides to install a bed rail on my bed to keep me from falling on the floor ( which I have done a few times recently) I bought the bed rail online myself. It looks similar to a hospital bed rail. Anyway, I was told my aide couldn't install it, and I now have to go up in front of the human rights committee of my agency to get permission to have it installed because they are worried it is too confining.

So now I need permission to install my property in my bed in my home. Tempted to call my lawyer, but this is just too funny

Hi CPDude. They are covering there own backs. Because if they care giver what's up the bed rails. They are constraining you which is abuse. Unless it is in your best interest to sleep with bed rails up.

Having said that is obvious that you have capacity and you are asking them support you not to fall out of bed. So in my opinion the best interest meeting is not needed.

But at least they justify their existence on the planet. They also have to give their staff "bed Rail Training." This is because there has been has serious injury caused by misuse of bedrails.

also a risk assessment for your bed Rail. Needs to be in place this will cover the correct installation of bed Rail.

However the family member but the bed rails on your bed then uses said bed rails to support you not fall out of bed. they will be perfectly happy with this.

And this is why care cost so much money. Are not allowed to use naughty words on this community site.

I'm sure this is what happens when medical insurance is involved. The legislation that governs anything medical, equipment, devices and worst of all, prescriptions is getting out of hand. There are dozens of forms for everything, personal involved and all these billions of pieces of paper eventually go, where? And who reads them all? So none of this surprises me, though it seems incredibly sad.

What I don't get is when the rails are installed and everything is done, the bed will basically be a hospital bed. No one I have ever heard of raises confinement issues when you are placed in a hospital bed in a hospital. The agency is trying to force group home rules on my private residence

I don't see the issue here - Why would you assume that a medical personnel, whose main task is to see to your medical care, would also be contractually allowed/obligated to install medical hardware/additions? This is something you call a handyman for, or, I assume you know someone who is capable of doing this for you?

Would you also feel slighted that they'd call you in front of a committee had you asked your home care provider to scrub your kitchen floor? Becuase it's pretty much the same thing.

What you're attempting, in the contractual world, is what we call Scope Creep. It's not looked upon favorably. It starts with installing a bedrail, and later, fix your blender. . None of those things a homecare personnel is qualified to perform, really.

You hire a handyman to do this, not ask your nurse to do it - no matter how simple.

Please, call your lawyer and let us know what they say.

It is in the EU all ready. But we in the uk are going to be leaving soon. Then we will be under a dictatorship. Then we will all be shot for being a bit like weird. Then there won't be a problem.

No we have have roles in the UK about bed rails and the use of them.

But it must be frustrating when you have your own property. And the care provider has to put these roles in place.
It a bit like me being put in a play pen and being told to stay there and play with my toys.

I am a bit confused if your bed is a hospital one it will already have bed rails. So why would you need to install new ones.

Care / support covers lots of different things and tarts, not just necessary the health and wellbeing of another person.

This is what the meeting is about on monday. They will wright up Risk assessment which will cover everything regarding the bed rails.

It gives them something to do and keeps them quiet. They may even draw some pictures and colour them in.

i'm guessing that the rails are freely available to buy and that, as such, they'll be fittable by 'any competent person' (to quote the legal-eagle)?
it sounds like a lot of bureaucratic crap which we have over here, whereby pedants try to control others' lives and pass it off as 'health and safety' when it's actually a matter of liability insurance, meaning that they're breaking the law by putting financial concerns before actual health and safety.
