NASA Astronaut on peeing in space

As this series of tweets has gone a little bit viral I'm surprised it hasn't appeared here yet;

It covers all the gory details of how to pee (and poop) in space (spaaaace!), and to me it sounds like diapers are actually one of the better options in zero-G

"And some days, the best solution is still a diaper or a bag taped to the ass"

Sounds like an easy choice for me, or anybody.

I'm actually surprised they don't use diapers more frequently for #1 and #2, rather than tape a bag to their "ass" poop, reach around and cut the poop off because gravity will not separate it.... etc...

This was a wild ride from start to finish.

Would 100 tampons be enough for week? Lol!

I've seen that quote before. I didn't think I was in possession of arcane tampon knowledge but I knew that was crazy. If not for the setting, I'd be sure it was a joke.

Yeah, there's actually not a lot of blood in a period. Just seems like there is.
Cycle lengths vary but typically people don't finish a small box of 18 in 1 month.

The pee stuff seemed rather tame and somewhat intuitive. The poop stuff, on the other hand...…………..

I'm glad I haven't had to deal with zero-G pooping. Ew.

Apparently, the venting of pee into space is very pretty. It catches the sunlight and sparkles.

:ROFLMAO:

Yes. Watching out for those PEEteorites and ASSteroids!

It was in "Apollo 13" that they called it the consolation urines

I knew of two people that did stuff for NASA and they had to wear diapers on the Vomit Comet. and it was a big thing that you did not us it or barf.

Just like Tom Hanks' "constellation urion!" in Apollo 13

Fun fact: Gravity creates most of the sense of urgency for peeing, so in microgravity, astronauts can't always tell when they need to go. It's such a complicated process that they pee on a schedule.
Sounds like that would result in some accidents, would be best if they stick to diapers!

There seems to be a slight inaccuracy in there. The nappies worn by the first women in space, starting in 1983 were not MAGs but DACTs; Disposable Absorbent Containment Trunks. They were intricate, bloomer-like undergarments with velcro fastening at the waist and leg cuffs, tailored to each astronaut's own measurements (and sometimes with the user's name printed on the label). Absorbency was around one litre although that was in practical use, not an abitrary water-test figure. Made by specialist aerospace equipment suppliers, DACTs were also evaluated for female pilots of high altitude reconnaissance aircraft, but in 1988 NASA replaced them with conventional, commercially made adult nappies dubbed MAGs, which men also wear.

Here's a DACT made for Sally Ride: https://airandspace.si.edu/collecti...e-absorption-containment-trunk-shuttle-s-ride

I'd say I go through around 15 or 16 a month, but my periods are short. Typically a couple days of moderate flow, and a couple where it's light enough that I don't need a tampon and can just let my diaper catch a little.

Previously my periods were pretty long, but after stopping birth control that I took to get them in the first place, I've had ones that are like half the length.

Cycles vary. I typically go through maybe 12-15 or so and also have a short ~4-5 day cycle. Recently started using acup though and honestly idk if I could ever go back to pads/tampons.

To remain on topic I wonder if the cup would be a viable option for astronauts... Probably not as they don't actually absorb just contain. So I see that getting messy fast

All I could think was just how must the ISS smell by now  all those little stray droplets and particles floating around it's a wonder there's not an outbreak of something up there!

I assume the air filtration must catch it and I guess they give the place a clean every so often.

I missed what happens to poop. Do I really wanna know?

Actually it's "Constellation urion."

I remember seeing part of this movie called "The Right Stuff."

This movie was based on true events.

The part I remember the most, was where the launch of the rocket was delayed, and on top of that the astronaut inside the capsule had no other choice, but to pee in his spacesuit, which wasn't equipped to handle.

I also remember the line in that film being said by the mission control guy. "Okay José, permission granted to wet your diapers anytime, son."
