Related anecdote: When I finished studying at WSU in '98, I took my key ring with all of my building and office keys and tossed it into the Lock at Lower Granite Dam--a ritual purge and a physical pun. Felt good. 
I'm sure my impulsive action caused some poor Facilities schmoe to have to re-key a dozen locks, but nobody ever came after me.
