Sometimes, when you come across photos of children in the 19th Century, you will notice that the hats worn by boys are often tilted backwards. (Mostly straw boater-style hats, usually worn with a sailor suit).
Why is this? Well, I came across the answer in a book. The hat tilted back is supposed to resemble a halo. This ties in with the idea of the well-behaved child, who is polite, obedient and is seen, but not heard. (Or at least something like that).
