Lifelong bedwetters?

1. If you are a lifelong bedwetter at, what age did you accept that it was going to be forever?

2. Do you still hope for a cure?

3. If you stopped wetting, would you be able to sleep without diapers?

I was told by the Urologist in my twenties that with medical my history I would probably not “outgrow” bedwetting. In my forties I tried some drugs. I took them for about a year and greatly reduced my bedwetting to the point I could wear only a pad at night. Because of the side effects my doctor had me discontinue them. Three months later I was back in diapers and finally accepted that I would need to wear them the rest of my life.

I still hope for a cure, but without drugs it is very unlikely.

My wife says even if I quit wetting, I would not be able sleep without diapers. She is always right.

I am a life long bed wetter and started around 7yrs old. I went to many doctors and urologists. Tried the meds which either didn’t work or had side effects that were not acceptable. Probably at some point in my 20s I figured it was permanent unless a new drug became available. About 9 yrs ago my wife had me start wearing pull ups and then diapers during the day. So my thinking is I will be diapered 24/7 for the rest of my life. It’s a pain sometimes, but she says it beats the embarrassment of having wet pants and ruining furniture.

I was bed wetter until well entered my 14, now I do wet it but because of the later acquired IC due to sequels of traumatic spinal injury being 24. But answering to your question, being 12 I believe it’s when I realized that spontaneous remission of bedwetting that everybody said happens sooner or later was false, nothing but a lie. And I learned that searching information about enuresis in the DSM (I was going to say 5 that’s the current edition but by then I think it was the DSM III yet. im talking of year 1991!). it’s when I knew the truth: that every year the percentage decreases until the 15 years old when there’s a 3% yet. Then statistics jump direct to 18 years old where they say 50% of them would have gotten dry in those 3 years, and the remaiNing 1’5% won’t be dry ever, to be what they call the residual percentage. By the way, that day I learned a priceless lesson: people lie, even those you are taught to trust and those who think lying are acting better that if they said truth because of ignorance or just believing it would be better for you at that time not to be aware of how things actually are.
Cheers guys!

I have always wet my bed so I can't imagine it stopping at this point.

I'm a life-long bed wetter. I guess I accepted it somewhere along in my teens. I can't imagine it stopping completely, although I do occasionally have a "dry spell" of a few nights or so. I committed myself to wearing protection many years back--cloth diaper/plastic pants at home, disposable when away from home. I am so used to my diapers and feel so safe and comfortable in them, I don't think I could quit wearing at all.

being over 50 now, i dont think i'll outgrow it.

Have never been dry at night, and depending on things may have issues in the day too.

I had a lot of medical issues, still do, but the least of which is IC, never not dealt with it so its second nature.

I have once and a while do go without a diaper is i'm having bad time with rashes and alike, just use bed pads...and not easy to sleep that way feels odd to say the least, but that may also be the rash too...

I guess i have always accepted it.

Not quite a lifelong bedwetter but definitely wet more nights than being dry. I grew up a chronic nightly bedwetter. I don't remember a y dry nights at all before my teens.

Me too. Putting a nappy on for bed is essential and has been for last 20 years of adulthood as it was from being a baby up to 16 years old. I’m 60 now and have night Incontinence due to spinal injury / surgery but also have daytime urgency and lack of sensation at times. Wearing a nappy is as normal as wearing my specs.

I was dry at night finally in my early 20s but had episodes of bedwetting later on sometimes just the odd night but other times it might last a week or even longer then I would be dry again. Then from being in my late 30s until my late 40s I was completely dry at night until one morning I woke up having wet the bed after almost 10 completely dry years. Gradually the wet nights increased and within a year I was back to nightly wetting. I have been in nappies 24/7 Since I turned 50.

Intermittent IC has to be the worse thing to deal with.

What I mean is that if you are always having accidents (of either type), then you plan and wear accordingly. But when it is infrequent, then you either take chances or assume the worst case (and waste protection).

I was a nightly bed wetter till 18-19 and in diapers nightly. Then it was very on and off throughout my 20’s like 3-5 times per week. Still in diapers most of the time. Then when I hit 30 it’s started coming back with vengeance and went back to being a nightly occurrence by my early 30’s along with day time continence getting worse and within few months I was wearing diapers 24/7 due to no warning or sensation throughout the day. At almost 40 now I’m still using diapers 24/7 for U-IC and over these years I’ve seen multiple specialist along with my family doctor and I’ve taken medication and done all the tests and ultrasounds and MRI/CT scans and so on. Best they can say is it neurogenic bladder along with nocturnal enuresis.
As for a cure there isn’t one and I’ve adapted to live my life without the need for extra medication or a cure and I’d say I accepted that I’ll require the use of diapers permanently around 4-6 years ago. It definitely wasn’t an easy realization especially after have the tiniest bit of hope throughout my 20’s. But once I realized that it’s out of my control and it’s just MY disability that I became comfortable enough owning it and just doing whatever it takes to not let it keep me down.

I was not dry at night until I was 6/7 and was put into Terry nappies and plastic pants. I was then dry for few years and then started to wet the bed again aged 11 and into my early teens so it was back into Terry nappies and plastic pants. I was then pretty reliably dry from age 14 until my mid twenties when I suffered a spinal injury and started to wet the bed again. By now there were disposable adult nappies available and I got them on the NHS. I have wet the bed every night since then and that was over 35 years ago. Unfortunately subsequent spinal problems and multiple surgeries has left me wearing adult nappies 24/7 as I have no sensation of having a full bladder and needing to wee. I can tell when I have weed or am weeing as I can feel that the nappy is wet. I now use the Tena Slip Maxi Active Fit and they are just part of my normal clothing. If by some miracle I was to stop wetting the bed I don’t think I would be able to sleep without wearing a nappy as I would always be fearful of wetting the bed again and would just not be comfortable as they are so much part of my life.

Remember Enuresis Clinic?
At any age it was embarrassing entering and sitting blushing but casting an eye around at others in case of being mutually "outed"!
As a little kid - not too much problem.....
As a teen - argh! storming heaven no boy/girl saw you even come here/or at worst case sitting in here with you - pray I can just fall through the floor and disappear right now......I am outed!
As an adult - of any age, wary to be recognised and mutually outed.....
Do you remember?!

As a teenager I was sent to the continence nurse. There weren't any other teenagers there at the time.

My mom thought I was just being a bedwetter at first. But I was also having BM accidents to. And by the time I was almost 4 the issue continued. That's when she took me to the doctors who finally figured what was going on. My mom tried with toilet training for quiet a while. It never worked.
Everyone in the family knew and treated me no difference (except I was always diapered.

Lifelong bedwetter with life-long daytime bladder issues too. My urologist told me in pretty plain terms that based on my symptoms and similar complaints from other patients, it was probably not ever going to go away. I also tried different medications over the years and the side effects were horrible or they didn't work.

All things considered, I don't hope for a cure unless it lets me sleep as well as I do now. If I have a dry night it almost always means I slept poorly. When I have a wet night I feel well rested and relaxed the next day. So I'm not looking to change that balance right now.

I’ve been a bed wetter all my life. Had a time between age 7 and 12 where it slowed to a few times a month, but it became nightly in my early teens.

I accepted it wasn’t going away in my late teens and have worn diapers at night since. I’ve been 24/7 the last few years after diabetes caught up with me and daytime urge U-IC set in. If a cure was found tomorrow that didn’t carry side effects, and would get me out of diapers, I’d do it. I’d continue wearing diapers until I could trust the cure worked… maybe 6 months to a year to prove the cure.

I’m comfortable with wearing diapers as my chosen method for managing incontinence. It has its drawbacks in the summer when heat is an issue, and leaks are sometimes unexpected, but otherwise I lead a totally normal life and very active life without side effects or awkward equipment glued or strapped to me.

As an adult I went to hospital for a urologist appointment. When called I found he had six male & female students in white coats with him! He said he was sure I would not mind, as it was a teaching day. There was a bit of tittering when he said I was a bedwetter. He proceeded to examine me "below the belt" and sent me with a paper to radiology. The paper said "Lifelong enuretic" - first time I had heard the phrase! At least I knew what I was......!! Later on he did a bladder examination under general anaesthetic - cystoscopy. Thankfully it was OK.
