Well, as long as the music isn't full of deep screaming only, then its all good to me. Exception being Rammstien assuming they would be classed as metal, love Rammstien. XD Then again it's not all deep screaming which is probably why.
Metal is not all about screaming gore. It's not all about Satan. Metal gets a bad rep, in regards to tattoos, lyrics, looks, and so much more.
I have an uncle in law that claimed to be a musician BUT he was a hardcore bible thumping Christian. I let him listen to a band called Woe of Tyrants that's actually a melodic death Christian metal band. His initial thought was evil. He judged by the heavy, fast, riffs that the band was unfit for him for a Christian guy. I never told him they were a Christian band, but you get the point.
Most death metal bores me. I respect the talent. It's just the repetitive inaudible growling. The fast, heavy riffs. The fast as you can kick and play snare.
I'd recommend Opeth. They do growl in some of their older stuff, but it's more understandable than a lot of it.
They matured more in to the melodic slow metal (more rockish) with singing these days.

Opeth - Deliverance
This is the one song that goes from heavy to slow melodic jazz rock.

Opeth - Windowpane
A complete slow song. Beautiful music that you'd never hear on the radio.

Opeth - Cusp of Eternity
Most recent work.
One of my favorite bands is called Symphony X. They've been around since the mid 90s. They have a great discography. They play heavy music but sing very well. Russell has one of the best voices for metal. Romeo (guitar) is one of the best in the industry. The rest of the band glues it all together.

Symphony X - Kiss of Fire
A great beginner song to learn what they are made of... it has a lot of the ingredients that the band is made of.

Symphony X - Without You
A mellow song with powerful, clean, singing.
Most bands you find away from the radio and other mainstream media are the best of the best.
Otherwise it's music that gets hammered into your head and gets catchy over time after endless airplay.
