Vintage diapers with shiny textured plastic

I'm more of an 80's guy myself, but I wanted pass along an item I keep coming across on ebay.

The 70's "diapermate" vintage diaper dispenser came with 10 large Pampers included. I've seen several listings over the past year, a few of which the sellers didn't clock the included value of the pampers.

The most recent one sold accepted "best price" for $150 listing, and I want to say offered me $125, but I passed.
nice find, haven't seen that before. That would be fun to have around. Wonder if anyone remembers have this in their room.

Hard to believe nobody is interested in my homemade z-fold Pampers! Then I’ll just wear it myself, to bed tonight! 😊

When you make your own, you get comfortable with thinking about how to do it better. The last photo shows it taped up already. I decided to do that because I love for the tapes to be perfectly placed, location and symmetry. I have a stick of wood, based on my waist size, that acts as a gauge and guide. So the diaper ends up being a pull-up, sort of, which is actually very helpful because I mostly just wear it, don’t use it.

So I’m taking it off to go to the bathroom, and it’s just so much more efficient and not at all destructive to pull down and up, rather than undo and redo tapes, and diaper pins. Moreover, the 3” wide white duct tape I use will absolutely not let go, so up and down needs to work. Fortunately, it does, just fine, albeit with some wiggling! 😝

How did you make them? Do you just take a plain white diaper and put a printed sticker and some duct tape on them? If so, what diaper are you using?

No, sorry, quite a bit more complicated. For starters, the plastic shell is a trash compactor bag, chosen for being very thick, and NOISY. (I only wear at home, and absolutely love the idea that everyone knows I’m diapered. I only run around in just my diaper, and maybe a t-shirt, so they can see, too. IRL, it’s just me and my wife, but it’s pretend, and I like to pretend that everybody knows!)

So they're made from garbage bags with something for stuffing? Do they still function if you wet them, or do you just wear them for the feel? Wouldn't they need proper elastic leak guards to contain the liquid?

Absorb just like real diapers. In fact, one of the layers is a reusable called Zorb, highly absorbent and something that won’t allow my pins to rip. As for no elastic gathers, early Pampers didn’t have them. There were leaks, which is why they got added. Might be an issue for you, but I’m a purist, need to be in Pampers from the 1970’s.

In Europe and the UK Pampers got the «Double Elastic» treatment in late 1983/early 1984 before the switch to the modern fitted hourglass form in 1986.

Elastic would be fine by me, but they have to be z-fold, bulky, lots of excess diaper between the legs, reminding you that you still wear diapers! But no elastic is better, because then the diaper gaps, and mommy is rightly concerned about leaks, and so she decides you’re wearing a pair of plastic panties, too!

Would you be willing to share a step by step on how to create your diapers? Love the idea and would like to try making them.

Elastics are better suited for the fitted hourglass shape IMHO.

Start here, outer shell, no plastic pants needed. Very thick makes for very noisy diapers, which I really like. Love being reminded, whether feel, looks or sound, that I’m wearing Pampers baby diapers. From Home Depot, less than $20. Just ordered more the other day.

Those Ultrasacs are extremely glossy.

Got it, what size do you cut out of the compactor bags?

Maybe not everything, but they do a lot right. Here’s how I slept last night (without plastic pants until winter). And, yes, I slept like a baby, because I felt like one. This diaper may not do it for you. Everybody’s different, has different ideas. I’m me, and I can hardly believe it’s what I get to wear to bed! Then wore it, and that was all, in front of my wife as we drank coffee and chatted this morning. Life is good!

My padding measures 24” x 34”. It works out great to fold over 2 1/2” on the sides. Then, I like 3” excess at the back, and 2” at the front. So your plastic will be 29” x 39”. At least the 24” x 34” pad fits me nicely. Cut the width first by slicing off the bottom of the bag. Then open and slice off a side, to end up with a piece 29” x 19 1/2”. Then unfold.

What’s the top sheet and do you use a spray glue or adhesive?

That plastic has a nice swishy crinkle on it.

You will need a layer of Zorb. I get mine on eBay. Be sure to wash/dry the yard you buy before cutting to size, as it shrinks. The other layers are disposable. I always pin my diaper, which the fabric makes it sturdy enough to do. Zorb is also ridiculously absorbent. I don’t use it directly though. I’m wetting into a disposable layer (when I do, which is infrequently at this point. Remember, the diaper takes around 20 minutes to make!)

I joked to my wife the other day, “Why do they have to make them so damn loud? It’s embarrassing!” She just rolled her eyes and said, “Yeah, right.” She knows how much I love to be embarrassed by wearing only a diaper in front of her and her pretend friends!
