I think I read yesterday that AmeriCorps was getting like a $500 million + increase in funding, hopefully some will filter down this way. Is JobCorp part of that, or are they privately funded?

There is a wholly different debate to be had on NIMBY and tapping our national resources so we are less dependent on buying energy from (and sending money to )other countries that wish us harm that has no easy answers either. Expanding exploration is not just a republican thing. Despite the rhetoric, this administration has also expanded areas for exploration and production, if I'm not mistaken.

I really don't mean this to come across as a rant or anything close to it, please don't take it as such. There is just no easy way to say just a little bit about this fuckup.

I'll let you in on a little secret on the gumbo. Down here, you can buy roux in a jar, dark or light. I started using it when I had the poboy shop, and man is it easy; you can't tell the difference from stirring hot oil and flour for 30-40 min.

y'know, this has been a topic of discussion around here recently (unbelievable, right?) and I think the realistic view on this is not to ban all drilling, but drastically improve the response mechanism so that leakage is contained when/if something unforeseen does occur. The response of our government has been a joke, and maybe even criminal if the Clean Water Act is to be believed. I understand that the government has no skill or expertise in plugging wells from a mile away, but they do have precedent and experience with all of the tools needed to help keep the spill mostly away from the shores. In my opinion, there is no acceptable reason for letting the oil hit the coast. Use prisoners, coast guard, national guard, .... every freakin warm body you can round up in order to check and maintain boom lines, skimmers, whatever is needed to intercept the slick.

Thick roux, medium dark (about the color of peanut butter) I've gone darker but it's so easy to let it get away from you (with a burnt flavor), so I'm pretty cautious with all those subtle flavors you marry in Gumbo.

So sorry about this devastating environmental disaster. Talking about thick roux got me thinking back to the McCain/Palin Republican Presidential Election Campaign and their push demanding unlimited off-shore oil drilling. Not off my Oregon or Washington Coast - EVER. EVER!

I'm sure it was good! I am eating as much gulf shrimp as I can afford to right now (for the obvious reason). Last week we nommed on U8 head on, New Orleans BBQ style with lots of french bread for soaking up the juice. I hurt myself, but SO worth it.

Thanks for the Whitney link! Looks like someone knew how to store it away in the proper environment to preserve the wicker. Doesn't appear to show any signs of deterioration at all after all these decades of storage. I just bought a brand new w/original box, 1970 era stroller off ebay. It had been listed with a BIN price for weeks until I finally couldn't resist any longer - Vintage Child's Peterson Stroller ~ Carriage w/Box Mint - eBay (item 200392583630 end time Mar-16-10 17:12:36 PDT) Nice addition to my other vintage strollers of that time.

Sounds like you both are going to have a nice fruit orchard on your property. Makes my mouth water just reading your message. That's something I've always wanted to do - have fresh fruit in season right from our own backyard. We have 4 acres with our home, so there's room. Just need some extra time!
