Role
  1. Incontinent
I’ve been doing pt for almost two months now and the therapist was stretching my leg and back muscles, he had his hand on my pelvis and a strap on it, it was hooked around his back and while stretching I peed, he was asking me if everything was ok I said slight pressure was on my bladder and before he stopped it started just as I said stop stop he asked why then he noticed and stepped away I was so embarrassed I felt like running. I was assured everything was okay that it’s not the first time it’s happened to him. As I was checking out and scheduling appointments for next week I felt like asking for a different therapist, but didn’t want to explain why

These people are taught to be professional and understand these things happen. I would not worry about it. I have been a nurse for over 45 years and I can't tell you how many times I have been peed, pooped, vomited and coughed on. These things happen. It is part of the job. It's part of being in health care. I hope you get better soon keep up with your PT.

I agree with you. I had a bladder CT just over a year ago and they put some medication in me with IV that made me feel like a I to take an urgent pee. The technician said 'If you feel like you have to pee real bad try not to.' I held out for awhile but that was all I could manage. He just wiped it up.

The pelvis area muscles can result in an unannounced release of urine, especially with a bladder that has some volume. You classify as incontinent and likely should have been wearing. At your next appoint, wear protection. Everyone will be dryer and as a result happier.

I am 24/7, U-IC and have had PT after several surgeries and I have always been very open regarding my wearing. As stated by Floodingpants, it is well-known within the healthcare industry.

I’ve been going to PT for over four months ( recovering from a stroke) and while I ALWAYS shower beforehand and put on a clean pull-up, I don’t worry about my therapist being concerned that I have a diaper on. Judging by the challenging conditions that appear to be affecting many of the patients I see, I guarantee you that diapers are common amongst physical therapy patients! Don’t waste your time worrying about it. They don

I had a diaper on he felt the warmth of it and just stopped and stepped back, although I didn’t pee on him it however was still embarrassing

Some of the IV dyes give you the strong urgency to urinate.

I appreciate this was awkward, but if you’re medically incontinent and you wear diapers to manage it, it would have been flagged on your medical records. PT’s are professionals and should be confidential about this.

Accidents suck but if you were diapered and it didn’t leak then it’s not the end of the world. Just a bit awkward.

I believe its called 'IV contrast' and its administered during the scan to get better images.

How does that work, do they run a tube up you junk and fill your bladder all the way up?

No they inject it through through an IV needle usually in the hand or arm. I believe my IV was in the hand because I have more exposed veins there. The solution works very quick and first makes you feel like your warm all over and then makes you feel like you have to pee real bad.

Interesting... Seems like it the goal was to fill the bladder it would be easier to just fill it directly

They told me the contrast dye is intended to get better images of the bladder and look in particular for things like tumors and cists. Just filling it with liquid doesnt apparently do this. I believe I did have to drink water well before though so maybe theres also an element of needing a full bladder. I think they did the CT scan on me because I was having a lot of bladder pain especially during the night when I felt like I had to go but didnt end up being able to go. And I also had a kidney scan that was separate but they used contrast dye for that too I recall and again it caused the same urgent pee sensation. I think its the dye itself that causes it.

Many PT practices have a pelvic floor PT specialist on staff. This is not the first time, nor the last, that they will have dealt with someone who has dodgy bladder or bowel control. It is a part of the job.

The IV contrast fluid goes into the blood veins all around the body. It makes better images on the CT scan (x-ray).
They usually scan a small part of the body, e.g the bladder area. The bladder is supposed to be near full, that's what the water drinking is for.

The direct filling of the bladder is another test that can be done, usually with sterile salty water.

PT's have all kind of people with injuries or diseases in for treatment, so diaper wearing is not uncommon.
I too felt real embarrassed first time my PT touched my bottom while massaging my lower back.
She didn't say anything, but I know she must have noticed I was diapered.
