Did you feel relieved by your psychotherapy ?

Ok, I am writing this because I feel like being nasty, and I need to express my anger. I am not perfect, this is my personnal experience and yours may be different.

I have some big emotional troubles. As a child I have been beaten by my parents, and of course what do other childs and adults do when they see that (people have a radar for it, they detect you, how carefully you try to hide it) ? They continue the abuse.

I am proud of what I have become, my youth was a real struggle, and I allways have chosen the right thing to do : being clever. More and more clever. I even have developped some autistic tendancies - I have a lot of respect for autistic people, I am a perfectly "normal" person, but I understand how relaxing resolving complex problems can be (and I know that there are autistic persons on this forum. I mean no offense, and I may be wrong. Don't hesitate to correct me !).

What was I saying ? I have post-traumatic stress. So, I have looked for professionnal help. The only relief I found was on my wallet

Madame, Monsieur, extraits choisis du festival :
  • My father had some sexually explicit behaviors with me when I was a kid. PSY answer : "You are still affectively dependant on your father". No. Never been excited about my father's dick.
  • PSY quote "What did you feel when your mother was beating you ?". Hmmmmm.... Pain. Physical and mental. You could have guessed.
  • "Ah, yes, so you invest yourself a lot in your work ?". Congratulations, this was the 4th session and at the first contact I told her that the reason why I came was because I worked like crazy and did not get the material reward for it. This madam had second sight for sure.
400$ per month to tell me something I have allways known. I am not a huge fan of these professionnals (I tried 4 of them), but hey ! It works ! My bank account is much lighter now !

And sorry, it is very nasty, but I feel much release ! I had to scream it to the world : a**holes do exist :)

Don't worry, time was the cure for me. Today I have an happy life, and a very nice job.

So, if like me you have to get through a very bad period, never lose hope. There is allways an end in the tunnel !

Ive written about my story before here so Ill sum it up. My father was a pedophile who began grooming me before the age of 5. He began beating and raping me around 8-10 years old. He stopped the sex and just beat me when I turned about 14. I left home at 16 and joined the military at 19. I did 14 years in the military and I got hurt and had to retire early. I have loads of mental and physical problems. My Drs have helped me immensely. My psychologists and psychiatrists have saved my life and given my family their husband and father back. Im sorry it did not work out well for you, but its been a miracle for me. I highly recommend therapy for those seeking relief from emotional anguish.

I feel good that it works for you. Don't let me discourage anyone from trying to get help. You never know, every action you can do to take care of yourself is important.

I guess for me it was bad luck, or that my personality makes me hard to access to.

I'm sorry to hear youhad a poor experience. I got therapy online with "better help" they match you with a professional that has specific skills for what you need, if you don't feel they are right for you it's easy to have another one selected. It costs significantly less than traditional therapy and financial support is available.

I did it for three months and I was very satisfied. It definitely helped me work through some of my issues and laid the building blocks I need to continue that journey on my own now😌

I would be pissed too if I spent $400 for those lame "deep insights" you were given. 😒🧐🤨

You could have gotten better answers from a magic 8 ball or a deck of tarot cards.

There are truly wonderful therapists to be found out there! It can take a bit of searching to find the right match for your personality and life experiences. Most are not bad and a few are truly great, and of course, as you unfortunately know: there are some real Hacks out there too.

I am truly saddened and sorry to hear of your abusive childhood! You were robbed of the most sacred feelings of safety, comfort, and love.

Says the person on a thread in a support community 🤔

Therapy in any form is for everyone, negative stigmas surrounding it are what keeps people from seeking help when needed. A little outside reflection is good for the mind and the soul to help you be the best you can be😌

I guess there must be really good therapists out there. One part of my problems is that since I'm French, I am stuck with French professionnals.
And damn, most universities here still base their teaching on psychanalysis (Freud, Lacan...). We didn't evolve a lot in 50 years !

One thing that I did not try are support groups : it seems that these do work quite well, apparently.

HEY ! I am currently writing on a support group ;)

Cheers !

I´m sorry to read that you´re not seeing any progress whatsoever with your therapy. Unfortunately, mental health is still a very neglected science, and there´s still a reigning belief that all mental health professionals are qualified to assess all kinds of mental issues, when in reality you have to look for a mental health specialist who is actually specialized in your special issues. Reading the frustration from your first post is like reading myself when I was seeing my first therapist: I needed a true specialist but got stuck with someone used to treat bulimic teens. In the end I spent thousands of dollars so she could rephrase everything I was telling her, but using "professional" terms and, after many years, there was just no breakthrough so I tried the next one... and the next one after that.

Not all therapists are bad... but the good ones are well hidden. I had to try 5 different professionals before I got with my current therapist, but once I started therapy with him I could tell there was a huge difference in his approach since our very first interview, and I´m so happy I found him because he´s been a great support for my issues and, for the past year, he´s also been a great support for my 24/7 padded lifestyle.

So don´t lose hope. Do some research and I´m sure you´ll eventually find a therapist who´s right for you!
