...donate your sperm? (or your eggs)?

I was discussing this with my mum the other day, and she said that she'd never donate her eggs, because she would always feel in some way responsible for the child that might be made.

I don't think it would it bother me at all. Even if I knew that there was someone out there that was technically 'my child', I don't think I'd think much of that. I guess the question is what matters most, nature or nurture?

In my opinion, your parents are the people you raise you, care for you, and love you. And genetics aren't overly important.
I'd consider giving sperm... I think there's some chance that I won't ever have kids, and it'd be nice to pass on some genes. Plus it would be helping people out who can't have children naturally. (And effectively it's getting paid to masturbate :p).

So what's your opinion on the matter? Would you give sperm/eggs? What's more important, nature or nurture?

I share much the same opion as you. I think that the parents are the one that raise and care for the child. So yes i would most likely give sperm.

Well said :)

I don't think I would have a problem donated sperm. It would be cool to think that some of my genes would be out there somewhere, especially since I don't really plan on ever having kids...

If you don't know the kid, the only thing they have is your DNA, your not their parents(in a psychological sense), besides I'd do it especially if I needed cash. I guess whatever helps the race is fine with me.

i think there are requirements in order to donate sperm to a sperm bank. I copied this off the sperm bank directory website:

Most banks look for the following qualifications:

Ages 18-44
Individual who were not adopted.
Healthy. No significant illness or conditions
No family history of genetic diseases.
Ability and willingness to produce a specimen in the laboratory 4-8 times per month
Ability and willingness to make a minimum of 6-month commitment.

It says you get paid $35-$50 per specimen. It may seem little but once you ad up 4-8 times a month over a 6 month period, that means you get paid $840-$2400!!!! It may depend on which bank you choose but you might need to check out availability and requirements for the bank. Here's a link to the rest of the site

Hmm, I wouldn't go that far... :p

It's only about $4800 annually. That's not to say it's not a hefty raise, but to live off of it? Imagine trying to put that on a resume!

Exactly, why waste it when you can get cash for it. Win-win situation IMO.

Good topic. Never really thought about it.

On one hand I would feel a connection to the child(ren), that I should have responsibility for them. But on the other I - and the other party - knows that it's all anonymous and the child may already be going to a family with a father-figure (possibly sterile?). So in that case, they may want a natural birth.

For those woman who play eugenics and make specific requirements as what features or qualities the donor has... well, that's pushing it a little for me. There should be an powerful screening program for all donors, and of course, have their sample tested before being put to use.

As for me personally, donating sperm has always seemed to be something people do when they are strapped for cash... a total money grab. So I really wouldn't donate.

I think it'd be an awesome idea. I really, really hate the idea of having children of my own - I never intend to do it. But that's always made me feel a bit guilty - an important part of being human is helping to continue the human race. After all, if no one bothered to have kids, we'd all die out.

But donating my sperm means I can still contribute to keeping our species going, while not actually to raise a child. And I can help people who can't have children of their own. Plus it pays quite a lot of money, so I can't see anything bad about it!

Well I officially can't do that as I have ADHD which is a genetically given to your children. But it wouldn't stop me from getting kids myself.

HA!

Employer: "So what is you job experience?"

Person trying to get job: "Oh, I been whacking off the last couple of months for cash..."

Man, I would PAY to see that interview!!

I would consider it, especially if I'm getting paid for it.

Personally, I wouldn't do it for money. I don't think they'd even pay you money here, simply because people here wouldn't like the idea of making cash off desperate couples who want a kid but can't have one naturally. I mean you don't exchange organs for money either.
I'd need another reason to donate sperm. Obviously, you cannot donate for a specific person, and I wouldn't want whoever gets my kid to know who I am for fear or having to pay big bucks for the kid, or messing up the parents' relationship. The only reasons I could think of is either because I want to help someone who will remain anonymous or because I may fear that's my only chance to keep my genes in the gene pool.
It's not like the process of donation would be putting anyone off a sperm donaton. :D From the amount of sperm the average male will produce and 'lose' in his life, that's like a piss in an ocean
