Hey everyone,
My name's Paige and I'm 28 years old. I'm looking for some advice on how to tell my friend I wet the bed, and how to prevent our room from smelling of urine the next morning since we well be sharing a room in a hostile in Italy for five days. She has no clue that I wet the bed and that I have to wear diapers during the night. She lives in Arizona so I don't get to see her often but Right now I'm kinda freaking out that she's going to have a big problem with this :-(. But I really want it to work out between us. So any advice on how to tell her would be greatly appreciated.

Secondly If she is understanding about my bedwetting. How do I prevent the whole room smelling like urine the next morning. I know there are diapers that help with that and I usually wear a Tena Slip Maxi which I feel my room doesn't smell in the morning but I might of just gotten use to it. So how do I prevent the whole entire room from smelling like me the next morning or maybe just maybe the room won't smell cross my fingers.

thanks
-Paige

PS I've considered not telling her and not wearing diapers but i feel afraid. Sometimes I do find my self getting up as much as 2-3 times a night to use the bathroom max 5 but thats if I wake up.

I would suggest that you inform her in a calm manner. Try to be as matter of fact and honest about this being a medical condition that you cannot control generally speaking. If she really is your friend then she will be understanding and respectful to you.

As for the smell I would suggest as odd as it sounds that you drink more water which will make your urine smell not as bad because it will be less concentrated. Don't eat certain foods as well like asparagus because they make urine smell worse. Taking Chlorophyll tablets also will help with the smell. When you wake up in the morning throw away the used diaper after you change out of it and make sure you put it outside as soon as possible. If your concerned about the bed use under pads to protect the mattress and you should be alright.

... and it's not like you'll be sharing a bed. also, would you consider wearing plastic pants over your diaper? it might cut down on the smell (just by preventing air circulation).

I don't think there's any need to inform her. Urine would be hardly noticeable as long as you drink enough water. Even if she does notice a slight odor there's no reason for her to think it's coming from you. It's a new environment, full of new smells and odors, and hostels are notoriously crowded. As long as you can change and dispose of the diaper in private you're set.

Plastic covered diapers contain odours betters than diapers with breathable, clothlike covers.

I am IC too, and when shared a room at college I always made sure my room mate knew. I always disposed of the diaper early the next morning and used plastic mattress pad. Like accepted said if your future room mate is truly your friend she'll accept you.

I don't tell my family or friends when I travel and sleep at a hotel, I change in the bathroom for night and wear underwear and gym shorts over my diaper with baby powder in it and go to bed, I have never gotten caught and the smell isn't there. In the morning I wrap my diaper in a plastic bag and paper bag and throw it away in a garbage can outside.

Hello,

Keeping your room window open will also help a bunch. I have a little fan in my window that pushes the fresh outside air into the room and the old room air flow out the top of the window that doesn't have the fan in it. Seems to work well on scents and of course makes the room smell fresh. You can also add scent to the room. Like maybe bring some Fabreese with you and spray a little to cover any pee smell. You can also try wearing some calone to help cover scents and maybe put a dab near the bed. But I can say drinking water helps with pee scent and changing the diaper and taking it outside as soon as possible helps a ton right there. Just my two cents.

Hello,

Personally, I have found it simpler to tell those with whom I am sharing space. It avoids a lot of emotional elements including inevitable worry and concern, possible panic, and the potentially embarrassing discovery. You would be pretty amazed at how this usually goes: most people are pretty cool about a medical problem and the solutions required to control it.

As far as smell is concerned: Tena Slip Maxi is one of the best diapers around both for containing moisture and for containing smell, but whoever mentioned upthread that you should be sure to drink more water was right: water dilutes the uric acid and therefore leads to urine that is essentially odorless. You're going to wet anyway; more water won't really hurt anything. :) And drinking water all day is a good things for you physically.

Good luck!

I feel like a idiot for forgetting to mention that. Yeah SandNbtwnMytoes this is absolutely correct. I myself have told close friends that I am IC and what I need to manage it for similiar reasons. Only one of them even cares and he is more concerned then afraid of me in that case because he almost thinks I am embarrassed.(I'm not fyi)

Indeed this is what I do myself to manage the smell. No one has even told my place smells bad. Even if there is a odor use a bowl of vinegar placed out in the middle of the bedroom and it will absorb the smell.

My college roomate knew I wore nightime protection and was glad I did (can be embarrasing to be known as the roommate of a bedwetter). But this was for over 9 months so it is hard to really hide it that long. Even after the first month neither of us felt embarrased by me changing into my protection at night. But for you, 5 days only, makes it doable to say nothing; just change in the bathroom and throw the disposable away in a tight sealed bag in an outside garbage can. Use plastic pants over the disposable for added protection; wash them in the shower and dry them thoroughly with a towel. The real challenge then is how to dry them further to rid any dampness without her seeing them. Maybe 5 separate plastic underpants for a fresh one each night?

Or if she is a really good friend and you are doing future activities with her overnight you may just want to tell her you have some challenges at night and wear protection and leave it at that. This way if you hang your plastic pants up to dry in the room she will not be totally surprised.
