I got a new computer for Christmas and Yahoo website doesn't seem to have yahoo messenger anymore and I can only find it for cell phones now. But yet I see the only places I can download YIM is on other websites that isn't yahoo but I am too nervous to download any programs from a unknown website, I see softsonic, cnet, filehippo, downloadastro.

Has anyone ever downloaded YIM from any of these websites and was it safe? What place can I download it from that is safe?
I also have a virus program on here so I don't know if it would stop any viruses if the file is bad.

You can use Pidgin as a YIM client.

Weird. I had a look at the Yahoo site and it looks like the only downloads are for smartphones. It seems like they expect you to use the web-based version of their messenger on Windows PCs now:

Otherwise, I've downloaded plenty of files from Filehippo without any problems. They're a legit site. And, as Near says, Pidgin is an alternative messaging program that is compatible with Yahoo.

Your antivirus should keep you protected from known viruses so long as you regularly check for and install updates.

SpywareBlaster is a handy program that blocks known malware sites. It works with IE, Firefox and Chrome (and maybe other browsers?) and works by updating the browsers' blacklists, so it doesn't slow down your PC by running all the time.
