Tornado drills in school

It’s that time of the year again, where many of us in the Midwest begin to think about storm season. I grew up practicing tornado drills in school from kindergarten through 12th grade, but when I mentioned this practice to a friend from Maine she thought it was the strangest thing. So my question is - who had tornado drills in school as a kid and where are you from? Is this just a Midwestern thing?
 
I've heard of tornado drills, but I think only schools in high-risk regions perform them. At my school, we only did fire and lockdown drills (Ontario, Canada).
