Seriously do any of you guys eat this stuff and if you do, how do you keep it from keeping from making your urine smell horrible?

There is nothing
drink extra water to flush your system
should be fine after 12hrs
wrap the diaper and bag it to prevent garbage stank

Not at all. Two reasons:
  1. It's a vegetable, and;
  2. For the very reason you cite next....

You can't. Asparagus has aspartic acid, which contains the amino acid phenylalanine. It's hard on the kidneys and creates that trademark smell on urination. Phenylketonurics are cautioned about consuming both asparagus and Aspartame (a.k.a. NutraSweet) for that very reason. Simply put, they're not very good for you.

It's actually genetic rather someone's pee stinks from asparagus. Genes also determine the ability of smell asparagus stinky pee. I think asparagus is yummy. There's only a few veggies I don't like.

Try internal deodorants.

I love asparagus and honestly, I have never noticed any really foul odors from doing so. I have to wear all the time I *might* fall asleep and frequently need to wear just about all of the time period as I have severe urgency issues but only when I'm not continually leaking (without any sensation whatsoever which is worsening over the past 18-24 mos) and frequently wind up in the same diaper for 12 hours consistently. I grant you that due to the prices of everything I'm not eating asparagus as often as I used to but I still eat it at least a few times per month, especially with meat. I wish I could eat it more as i really and truly enjoy the taste.

One other issue i have may be partially responsible for me not really smelling this. I'm ALWAYS THIRSTY! I drink a minimum of 2 gallons of Crystal Light lemonade (with 8 ounces of pure lemon juice in every gallon, simply tastes AMAZING) being my drink of choice. I also drink at least 2 sizeable cups of coffee every day, or at least every day I'm able to get out of bed which hasn't been going very well for the past couple of weeks sadly. I also eat a pretty big bowl of cereal for breakfast (and sometimes dinner...I happen to LOVE Wheaties & Special K) so figure in at least 12 ounces of 2% milk as well.

I had a kidney function test run by my VA Dr's a month ago and they're astonished as my kidney function is damn near perfect despite the multitude of medical issues I have and the fact I'm weeks away from being 52 as kidney function generally degrades with age and especially with the tons (over $100k/yr) of prescription medications I've been on for most of 20 years. My Dr was pleasantly surprised at this.

Now, I have no idea if this has anything to do with anything or if it is in any way related, but I figured I'd add that information.

I solved the problem years ago...I don't eat asparagus!

To clarify, I have never liked asparagus. Unfortunately, my mother did like it, so we had it for dinner way too many times for me.

I do like and sometimes eat asparagus! On a more routine basis I also drink pretty strong coffee, which has some chance of making uniquely stinky diapers as well.

In general I just try to stay hydrated to dilute the odor down. If that doesn't work, a discretionary early change is always helpful. At least for me the odor tends to filter out of me over a fairly short window, so in the best of circumstances I can get most of it out in one big wetting. Then I can change right away. One reason I always carry at least one extra diaper, just in case...

I originally asked made this post because I had to choose between getting asparagas or goodnites at my local store. If I did get the goodnites, then knowing me I would most likely want to wear them the next day. For me the smell from asparagus mostly kills any urge to wear diapers. The only reason I went with asparagus is that it paired well with my valentines day dinner I planned :p

This puppy won the smelly asparagus pee lottery too! Now mostly avoid asparagus, but like it as yummy food so it's super annoying!

if you can smell it, that means your kidneys are working great!

I enjoy asparagus and have it for dinner several times a week. My kidneys are fine and I notice little or no difference in the odor in my pee soaked cloth diapers. Pee smell from asparagus varies from person to person. Eat what you enjoy.
