Value-Added Tax, it's basically a tax added on to most goods or services

Providing Amazon listings are setup right, they should have the right tax code associated with them and be zero rated for individuals. Amazon will however almost always be more expensive than going straight to a retailer's own site as you have to pay the Amazon tax on top of the retail price.

Sales tax is VAT, different rates apply to different products or services. It is one of the fairer taxes as the more you spend the more tax you pay. In the UK things like food and children's clothing are zero rated for VAT, feminine hygiene products got reduced and there is a movement to zero rate them also (as they are clearly an essential rather than optional purchase). Some countries have other reduced rates for things and some countries do not. Most European VAT rates are higher than the total sales tax applied to products in the US though.

Maybe, but when I spend time in TN HOLY SHIT does that hurt! 9.5% sales tax!!!! That is BRUTAL although in Pa my combined household taxes are over $4000/yr (when I bought my house way back in '96 they were $1230/yr in NE Pa, and we can't hold a candle to NJ or NY!) and in Tn they have nowhere near the same rate. My best friend lives on 4 acres in a similar size house and pays $1100/yr combined, so it does work out in the end.

But also don’t forget if you claim the tax exemption when you’re not entitled to it, you’re committing tax fraud.

I have registered autism should be ok but this is a valid point but most sites i have seen add the discounts automatically as you dont need too prove anything for individual orders

Indeed they do, but if you read the terms and conditions they will often say that you should technically send proof of entitlement to them which can then be put on file (I’m paraphrasing). This puts the onus on the customer to prof they are qualified.

Realistically the chances of getting “done” for this are minimal, but at the end of the day tax fraud is tax fraud, and should one chose to claim a benefit they’re not entitled to, they are taking a risk.

PS for the avoidance of doubt, the above is not aimed at you in any way given you have a medical exemption from VAT on these products 🙂
