I have heard about this sort of thing happening in a few countries before (last time was in some Asian country, I forget which one) , this time it happens to be Chechnya (a mostly Muslim area of Russia).

I know the reason these countries are so against LGBTQ is because of old fashioned religious beliefs, but its just ridiculous that they go so far, I don't even think there is any reason to deny gay people the right to marry, just let people be themselves and do their own thing in peace.

Either it doesn't involve you and you shouldn't care, or it does actually involve you and then there is no reason to be against them if you are one of them.

And of course they are denying that the reason why they are detaining and torturing these people (to the point that some have died) is because they are gay, they probably know on some level that most of the world (the developed countries anyways) is against that kind of treatment on that basis; but I don't think they really care.

I was never a religious person ever. It stems right down to the fact that many take their religious reading material and what ever religion they believe in very seriously. Some very fanatically. It is all over the world. Remember hate is a taught trait that starts from the parents. I will be the first to admit that my father was a very racist and bigoted person. I swore to myself never ever to follow in his footsteps. Always remember people are scared of that which they do not know. The world was flat a few hundred years ago. Religion is something many don't want to discuss or even get into. Of course you all remember the spanish inquisition of the 1400's and of course burning of witches maybe 150 years ago. That is our history. There are still thirteen states in this mighty nation that still don't recognize same sex marriages. Religion wants to control the world and in many parts of the world the church has succeeded ! I wrote many essays and thesis on racism and bigotry in college and I live by this slogan.Bigot Kids.jpg

"They don't hate gays, they hate gay propaganda!"

Sure. Yeah, okay. And the sun never shines in Saudi Arabia.

Man, this makes me livid.

As has been pointed out in this thread, the hatred of gays based on religion simply doesn't make sense. Even those who supposedly take their religion very seriously need to cherry-pick teachings, ignoring others, to try to justify their behavior.

Throughout history, it seems like there is always someone or some group deemed to be deserving of abuse and exclusion (in grade school, this might be the kid with a cleft lip or stutter, for example), but the targets change with the times. Has anyone else noticed this? It honestly makes me wonder… do such people hate gays, or is it that they just hate, and gays happen to be a fashionable / convenient target?

Well, these areas like Chechnya, some Asian countries, and parts of Africa, and probably all of The Middle East are ruled by whatever their major religions are in that area.

The problem is they take it that their God(s) hate Homosexuality, believing it is that Man should be with Woman and anything besides that is subjective to any punishment ranging from arrest, to torture, to outright execution.

In these countries a lot of things are still as they were 100s, if not 1000s of years ago.

I'm fine with people believing what they want, but I dont agree that it gives them permission to be Judge, Jury, and Executioner; or even to act like they are somehow above other people just because of their religion.

This is why our founding fathers wrote into our Constitution the separation of church and state. The Old Testament has a nasty history of the prophets wanting anyone who disagreed with them to be stoned to death. Personally, I'd just like to get stoned, gay or not.

Religion seems to be at the root of all other forms of hatred.
Racism and Homophobia throughout history has always been justified by religion.
Slavery in the US was justified by religion.

In order that any group of people become more wealthy, other folks must become less-so. By necessity there must be some sort of economic stratification or difference.
In the same way, in order that one faction of a society seeks to make themselves more righteous, more deserving. They must identify another faction whom can be labeled as less righteous or deserving. Black, brown, woman, LGBT.
It would seem that the movement toward equality for people, toward all humanity, maybe for all life, is a notion worth examining. Worth taking to heart.

Well, the problem is how are you gonna get these countries to move towards equality when at the same time it would be telling them to change how things have been for 100s/1000s of years?

I dont agree with their views because they are acting like the LGBTQ community has done something terrible on the level of murdering somebody, like these people are actual Criminals for being different.

They should at least treat them like human beings and leave them alone, but you can tell them anything, it doesn't make any difference until you can get them to see that their crusade is completely wrong and the people they are treating like murderers and criminals have done nothing deserving of such treatment.

This is why people flock to developed "free" countries like The United States, countries in Canada, Countries in Europe, etc.

Countries where they don't have to fear for their lives just because they are different from the "acceptable" societal "norms" ; I mean all the justice system has to do in these countries is prove these people are Gay and then they have the go ahead to do whatever they want.

I don't think anyone is sending these homophobic pastors overseas, they do that all by themselves.

The whole idea that they are "recruiting" the youth into being gay is ridiculous, and completely unfounded, also Gays ran the Nazi Party? Pretty sure one of the things the Nazis were 100% against was Homosexuality.

I guess they will make up any false "Research" to try and pass absurd anti-gay laws that allow them to imprison, torture, and kill gay people.

Much like that Homophobic "Pastor Dr. Martin Ssempa" (that stupid "Eat Da Poo Poo" dude that was involved in passing that Anti-Gay Legislation in Uganda, who was blasted all over youtube in dozens of videos for talking about the things that Gay people supposedly do in their bedroom)

Sapphyre,
It's complex. Lots of folks are motivated by disgust, whether the object of their disgust is a DL, gay, of a different ethnic group, or has a physical difference. Disgust leads to dehumanizing and from there you can easily get anywhere on the spectrum from having the satisfaction of being superior to cleansing the species.

Anyway, the venom is spewed towards anybody who isn't Normal (Stepfordian?). And since macho fears being seen as having any chance of gayness, beating up or shouting slurs specifically at gays can salve the bigot's pain.

LOL. I don't know what he said, but gays are as diverse as straights. Why, I've heard that some gays even wear diapers!!!

It's a Sears thing. Take one of the old Sears catalogs, open it to any page and randomly point to an item. There's somebody somewhere who wants to sleep with that item.

This particular news has been public for about a couple years, I believe. I was aware of the Chechnya situation pretty early on. Chechnya knows about the rest of the world's thoughts on it, and knows they have secret journalists in the country, but refuse to acknowledge that this is happening, and even refuse to acknowledge that there are any gay people in existence in their country (as a way to eradicate homosexuality, they first eradicate the possibility from their mind).

Basically Pastor Dr Martin Ssempa was trying to make Gays seem like they are extremely nasty by saying they do something that I'm sure almost all of then dont do (you could guess by the one line he said that he is most famous for).

As for Chechnya trying to deny that Gays exist, they clearly know that isn't working and that's why they are arresting, torturing, and killing them; they somehow think that will make them go away.

There will always be people who are homophobic, whether religion is the reason why or not, though with most people it comes down to their religion while others are quite open despite their religion. I find the worst offenders is the Islamic faith, but that is mostly because of Political and Religious figures than the religion itself.

Please be advised;
The title of "Dr" that is being used in regards to Mr Ssempa may be inaccurate and unwarranted.

Ssempa graduated from Makarere with a Bachelor's degree in Social Science, specialising in sociology. He later received a Master of Arts degree in counselling from Philadelphia Biblical University.[1][4][5] In 2006, that same university awarded Ssempa an unaccredited honorary doctorate for his work with people with AIDS. In 2010, it denounced Ssempa for his public policy on sodomy in Uganda.

That is because it is, he is using Dr to make himself seem more credible than he actually is, that'd be like calling myself a Dr without really having a PhD or Doctorate in a subject.

In that case my I in serious-jocularity suggest the members/respondents of this thread proffer the title of honorary Dr to BabyTyrant, to aid him in his unwavering pursuit of truth and equality in this, and other threads. do i hear a second?

Provided that BabyTyrant approves of-course.

Yes I am well aware that Pastor "Dr" Martin Ssempa is in no way a Doctor, he is about as much a Doctor or "Dr. Ivo Robotnik" from Sonic (AKA more of an evil madman than an actual Doctor) and sure you can call me Dr, if Pastor Martin Ssempa can do it so can I right?

Edit: I saw his revoked degree(s) were already mentioned.

Both the Christian and Islamic faith have oddballs that have homophobic beliefs. While current events in the Middle East show the worst of it right now, overall Christianity as a faith (on all fronts) has shown much more homophobia across all inhabited continents with predominantly Christian cultures.
