pacifiers as a kid

did anyone on here have a paci that parents knew of after the "normal" age even maybe at special ocations ?

Nope, I had fully given them up by the "normal age" to do so. Too bad I've gone back years later

Yep. I can’t exactly remember what age it was I eventually gave it up, but it was definitely older than “normal”. Likely I was made to give it up for starting school I’d imagine.

I don't remember having a paci but I do remember being a constant thumb sucker. My mom would put alum on my thumbs when I was little.

I had mine several years after the appropriate age probably till I was nine.

I don't remember having a paci but I do remember being a constant thumb sucker. My mom would put alum on my thumbs when I was little.

That was me as well. I never had a pacifier, but I sucked my thumb until right around kindergarten. Mom tried for a while to break me of the habit by painting this bitter, brownish solution on my thumbs. I'm not sure what it was, and I remember being furious at her. I was determined not to let her stop me, and eventually she gave up, although I stopped on my own not long after. It might've been peer pressure, like somebody calling me a baby on the bus, although I don't remember any specific incidents.

I got my first pacifier only a few years ago. So nice.

I left paci before my three years. But when my sister born, I stold one her paci and secretly used it. One day was out. Around my 11 years I bought first paci for me. And still use pacis, but in adult size.

If I remember correctly, I think I sucked my thumb even with it painted with alum. It's like it was some sort of autonomic action that I had no control over.

No, I never had them. My mother doesn’t believe in pacifiers.

I asked my mother about it recently and she said that they are a choking hazard (she says that she has seen many news stories about this over the years) and as far as she knows they always have been (at least as far back as the 1970s and 1980s).

Therefore, whenever I was stressed out I would just have to suck my thumb.

I’m from the uk so we call pacifiers “dummies” here. And my parents never stopped me using them. I have autism so I use them if I’m stressed out, but it never bothers my family who all know. My brother stopped using his dummies when he was ready he wasn’t pushed into stopping by my parents.

I was out of them very early. I vaguely remember my parents telling me it would damage my teeth, and that was pretty much that. I sucked my thumb briefly, but didn't want to be called a baby at school.

Only recently got back into them.

I have zero memories of a paci as a baby / toddler
looking at baby photos can't even find one of me using one
but around 10 I got curious and bought one with my allowance. (wonder that the cashier thought)
I hid it in the garage and used it a few times
wasn't really my scene. Think it was more the thought of it than the practicality I enjoyed

I was a thumb sucker, still sucked my thumb at night when I was a teenage and wet my bed. I would suck my thumb after my mom pinned my diapers on after dinner. I started sucking my thumb again when I went back to wearing diapers full time.

I never had one as a baby but from toddlerhood I really wanted one. After much pestering and begging my mum bought me one when I was 5, I think she thought it would be a novelty and I’d get bored of it after a few days but I was obsessed and wanted to use it all the time. After a while it got lost, I looked everywhere but never found it and my mum refused to buy me a new one saying I was too old and the original might turn up. In hindsight I’m pretty sure she binned it on purpose when she realised I wasn’t going to give it up on my own.

Yup - i got to keep mine till i was 8... i'm guessing my parents didn't care to take it away while i was still in pamps. After i stopped wetting at nights then it was put away can't remember exactly when. still sucked my thumb though...lol..

I never had a paci as a kid, but I sucked my thumb until I was in 2nd grade. Today I like the paci better.
