First time really posting in the 'Off-topic' category...

I thought it would be interesting to see the furthest people have traveled in the directions North, South, East & West.

First, do the points for you're own country (mine is UK) and then the do for the world.

I'll start:

(My country-UK)

North - The shores of Loch Ness, Scotland
South - London, England
East - Great Yarmouth, England
West - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, Wales (no joke, that is a real place, I went because of the name)

(World)

North - Oslo, Norway
South - (probably) Catania, Sicily, Italy
East - I think Berlin, Germany
West - New York City, USA

If you want, you could also put the highest place you've ever visited. Mine is Mt. Snowdon, Wales, at 3,560 ft or 1,085 meters. Climbed it fully padded.

Honestly, don't feel embarrassed if you haven't been that far.

travailed all along every border of the continental United States several times.
was stationed on O'hau and have been on both Kaua'i and Maui.
i have also travailed all over western Canada.
and i have been all over the Pacific Ocean, though having never set foot on land other than the Hawaiian Islands. other then that, "where" in the Pacific is still classified.
however as a hint i can say it was all done at varying depth's of between 58 foot and 1375 foot.....

hello Marka;
i just wanted to mention that in all actuality the Haleakalā Summit is almost 20,000 foot above the sea floor, thus making it every bit as tall as Everest.

Oh! I just now read "off the sea-floor"... not ASL lol... anyway... I've also only listed the elevation that I attained not necessarily the peak or summit... though, I think the observatory, is on the summit in this case...
My runner-up would be Pikes Peak (CO) which, I believe the highway summit is at ASL 9,163 ft... not sure from sea floor though... or, what part of the sea-floor we may measure from ;)

Sorry Guys.

Then my highest would be the visitor center on Haleakalla Mountain in Maui.

I've always wanted to visit Hawaii. How was your time in Maui?

I loved it. But there again I was on my honeymoon.

This seems to be a fun post.

As far north as I have traveled, well that would have to be Chena Hot Springs in Alaska, which is just a little south of the Artic Circle. I spent a couple of weeks at the North Pole... Well... North Pole, Alaska. :smile1:

South - well that would be Tijuana, Mexico

East - Baltimore, Maryland. [edit] Actually, I think my time in Orlando, Florida is farther east than Baltimore.

West - All along the pacific coastline from California to Alaska.

Highest point - (oh and I have to share that those who said 36,000 feet are likely incorrect, as above 29,000 feet aircraft are assigned intervals of 2000 feet. I used to be an air traffic controller so I happen to have a little insight on this. You would have been assigned 35,000 feet "Flight Level 350" or 37,000 feet "Flight Level 370" but not 36,000 feet. Once above 29,000 feet the assigned altitude is in increments of 2000 feet for separation.)

But my highest non airplane altitude is 14,420 feet at Mt. Evans in Colorado. But I think that is a bit cheating, as you can drive to almost the 14,000 foot level. I am much prouder of my hiking and mountain climbing experiences where I have been atop Kings Peak at 13,528 feet.

East - Bangor, Maine
West - Kenai Alaska

World

North - Fairbanks, Alaska
South - Auckland, New Zeland
East - London, England; Tokyo, Japan; or Jalalabad Pakistan (depending on your worldly definitions of east and west)
West - London, England; or Bucharest Romania (depending on your worldly definitions of east and west)

Its hard to answer the East and West question as it all depends on your definition. I am from the U.S. and have been on either side, and in, Russia so the East/West division can be confusing from my point of view. If you treat the border of East/West as the Prime Meridian at Greenwhich then the furthest East/West I've been is London.

The highest I've been is 48,000 feet in the back of an F-16D over Alaska. The highest I've been on foot was Pikes Peak, Colorado 14,114'.

You know, I am almost certain it was an estimate and not meant to be exact. XD
