I have been diapered 24/7 for a long time. I am finding that I am going more often and often with little to no notice at all. The frequency of wetting and messing is up compared to 5 years ago. It used to be that I would mess once a day, now it's 3 times most days. And I have trouble staying dry for even an hour unless I'm sleeping

It is normal from what I have read and experienced as time goes on your body gets used to being diapered and knows it's ok to release any time while diapered. A visit to your urologist will see if it's something new that's causing your more frequent settings.

I have gone from it happening a couple of times a week to 1 or 2 times a day in 5 month time frame. I am dry most of the time and I try to change shortly after flooding

over time your body gets used to being in and using diapers and your control lessens
if your concerned about that see a doctor.

CPDude,

I think that you need to get medical advice regarding what's going on. You say that you've been diapered 24/7 for a long time and that the changes you describe are relatively recent and progressive. From what I've read and from my own experience, I agree with the others that increasing automaticness with regard to urination is something that is at least commonplace. However, going from messing once a day to three times a day is more of a concern. Many people with bowel incontinence have a "bowel program" that often involves things about their diet and perhaps the use of enemas to reduce the frequency of bowel movements and cause them to occur at a predictable time of day when it's most convenient to clean up. Check it out with you physician and maybe seek referal to a gastroenterologist.

Having your bowels move 3 times a day is much healthier anyway. Mine move a lot easier now that I am on the Nullo type supplements. Could be you are drinking more too. If you feel something isn't right though, you can get better advice from a physician.

I've been 24/7 for over 11 years and my situation has not changed much over time. However, I do have periods where I might have zero control and periods where I might have a tiny bit of control. Part of that might be diet. I agree with Iconinmiss, changes in your bowel movements over time are more problematic. Have you been checked out by a Neurologist recently? Incontinence is a symptom of disease or illness. Changes in that could be simply diet or something more serious. If it persists, see a doctor.

You're not abnormal, for a person with cerebral palsy. I know you have that, because we're friends, and because I looked at your profile, when I noticed your username. I make a habit out of it, so I can check to see if there're any other contributing diagnoses, when they post, "help me," type stuff.

I have that, "My bladder spasms go away when I sleep," thing, too. based on your other posts, diapers have been a lifelong solution for you, except for a few, ill-fated, "trying to shame you out of it phases," correct?

Everyone has a little patch of skin in the private area, called the perineum, when you wet, and it stays that way a while, a signal gets sent to the bladder, and it relaxes. Some folks leak almost constantly. Maybe try changing more often, so your perineum won't stay wet?

I notice a lot of the time, that either staying clean & dry, or being able to, "go," depends on my position. Like, if I've gotten out of my wheelchair, and I need to pee before I get back into it, I have to think, "Close your Bladder sphincter," or, "You stupid body! Don't you dare poop!" Other times, the pressure put on my bladder from settling, does too good of a job keeping it closed, and I'm sitting on the toilet, thinking, "Will you just let go!"

The 3 BMs a day thing, whould only concern an allopathic doc. Naturopathic docs say 3 smaller, not hard, not diarrhea, poops, is the way it should be. If 3 meals go in, 3 should come out. 1 upon waking, or after breakfast, 1 up to 1 1/2 hours after lunch, and 1 up to 1 1/2 hours after dinner. Bottom line is, it sounds like, run of the mill, CP bladder spasms, from one CP person to another, and you're most likely just fine.:hug: If you're worried, see the doctor, but be advised, some docs are drug and surgery pushing. . . Ehem. Medical advice isn't bad, just be careful who you see. Spaz and I have horror stories.

For some folks, like me, potty shaming works. . . Too well. 'Tis an evil, wretched thing, and should never be done! I distend my bladder sometimes, in an effort to tell it that I'm in control, it's not, and it gets all tired and leaky. I don't drink nearly enough, so it usually shrinks back to normal size. When I do drink enough, I'm really funny about when. Like, I'll drink the drink intended for breakfast, and the one intended for dinner at the same time, and nothing with dinner. I'm just super glad you don't do that to yourself. I know it's bad, but it's my only option for now.

Just like me. I decided to start wearing nappies all the time and lost what control I had left very quickly.

I do think that is normal. I've been wearing diapers the on and off for my entire life to deal with my incontince. My problem is mostly a nighttime one but I will also wear them when I have limited access to an accessible toilet. (I have CP) I've noticed that I wake up either wet or messy most mornings now. I do think that when diapered your body does relax, for the simple fact that you know if you need to pee or poop you can and there will be no issue. I also think that the other contribution is I wear them more during the day then I have in the last couple of years. It is actually physically easier for me to wear a diaper. I find in many older (and even a few newer bathrooms) have really short low toilets and I have trouble getting up from those unassisted. If I don't have access to an accessible restroom with a higher toilet, and I need to poop, I'll just use my diaper, change it and get on with my day. So I really think that increased use of diapers, does increase my need for diapers. I'm not ashamed of it, and I hope no one else with access physical disability is, because all you're doing is increasing the quality of your life.

CPDude,

I share much of your circumstance. I am double incontinent and wear 24/7.

3 BMs in a day is nothing to worry about and is within the so-called parameters for "normal." I have 2 to 3 a day. What is unusual is the recent change in bowel habits - from 1 to 3 BMs per day. You might consult with a colorectal surgeon just to ensure that all is well down below.

However, if the extra BMs are having an adverse impact on your lifestyle (which, from my own experience, I suspect they would), that is something else. In my case I self-administer preventive enemas each morning with the approval of several medical specialists. These are old-fashioned red rubber bag soapsuds enemas - not chemical Fleets. This clears out my colon and lets me go about a normal stress-free day.

I probably have administered about 2,000 enemas without any problems. It really is not a big thing and does not take up much more time than you would have spent changing a messy diaper. I have written a free white paper on the subject. If you are interested, let me know and I will post the link.

Good luck!
