No, he looked at me oddly and left the room.

We've had a good working relationship since but haven't every really seen eye to eye. It doesn't help that he's in sales and I'm an engineering consultant (consulting engineer?); he finds work for me to do and signs me up to contracts. It's therefore in my best interests to have a good working relationship with him but it's like we speak different languages. He's good at his job and I'm good at mine but there's little shared understanding.

That's far from the limit of odd behavior in that workplace. When you have a bunch of people with high IQs all crammed together long enough, it gets weird.
