since I kinda know whats goin on at his place I can answer for him, his parents got rid of the computer because they were renting it and couldnt afford it any more, so my dads lookin' at building him one <pretty nice of him, huh ^^> and they got rid of the internet <which J claimed to be slower then dial-up> for the reason that they no longer had a computer, I have fixed up J's old celly and he's usin' that, but he doesnt have internet, so im going to look into getting him a wifi card so he can smooch off me for the time being, < I'm his next door neighbor, I could easily open up my window and watch him play his PS2 in his room, lol> anyway, imma try to help Jay out because he my friend 'till the end ^^

$500? If you're just looking to browse the web, listen to music, and do pretty much everything but play games...it shouldn't cost that much. A system with 512mb ram, 1.2+Ghz cpu, 40gb+ hd and XP running would suffice...monitors are easy to come by (most people are throwing away 17" CRT's or selling them for like $10), and a keyboard and mouse are cheap. I seriously wish you lived around here, I have those kinda systems laying around

Well, I could probably send you all the parts without the case for fairly cheap. The case would be insanely expensive though. I'm also in Canada, so shipping and duties at the border might be a little high, but I could probably do some checking. If it was just the parts, I would check out ebay or craigslist as well.

I absolutely quote andysetra. Nearly all offices/business that work with computers tend to have a quite frequent equipment turnover. Last year I put together 2 PCs for my dad (an 800 mhz and a 1100 mhz) using old parts (motherboards, graphics cards, hard drives, etc...) I got for free from one of my customers who was throwing them away for updating his systems, and assembling them with some other parts I had around. If you don't need to do professional graphics or extreme calculations, that's more than enough for browsing the internet and doing some office and basic multimedia stuff such as watching videos or listening to music.

Then if you want a brand new PC to play videogames and so on that's another story, and in this case a price between $500 and $1000 isn't that bad, but you can find these prices in regular shops (at least where I live), maybe less if there's some special offer or sale.
