Hiding awkward files.

I couldn't help but notice the 'hiding porn' thread and peoples general lack of knowledge when it comes to hiding those questionable files.

I've posted this somewhere in a thread before, but I thought I may as well post it again.

Go to your C: drive and right click, make a new folder and give it a name.

Now. Go to start - Run

You'll now have a little bar up, waiting for text.

Type this in exactly

attrib +r +a +s +h c:\foldername

Now go to your C: drive and right click refresh, the folder will disappear. The only way of getting to it now is to type it in at the navigation bar at the top.

If you can't be arsed, I've gone ahead and wrote you a batch script that you can just double click. Once you've done that, just go to your main homedrive and add hiddenstuff to the end of the directory name. Job done.

Hidden from 'Search' function, hidden from 'view hidden files', none deletable until attrib -r is specificed.

Stickying that might be a pretty good idea. XD

...Though putting it on the wiki as well might be kinda redundant. n.n;

Why, are we a pr0n website?

It's a useful thread, but making it a sticky would be off-topic.
+rep, though.

I don't think the wiki supports file download either, nor would I ask Moo to host it. I guess I could always paste the script in for people to copy into a notepad file.

@Dark - Yeah, I'd say you're right there, make a sticky in 'Computing' under off-topic if anything.

Lets make it sticky (Perhaps a Wiki?)
Porn...sticky...oh, the images *shakes head and :wallbash: so the images leave*

And please do put write an article into the Wiki, just don't mention porn but rewrite it with "hiding secret files, like TB stories". ;)

Yeah, I personally don't have any porn. I do have lots of cute TBDL pictures, my desktop is even one, the joys of everyone knowing I guess.

Anyhow, Peachykins, may I please sugguest this be stickied in the computer sub-forum located under off-topic?

Well, that is a good way of doing things but another way if you want it really secure is using something called a PSD (Personal Secure Drive), its a program that you install and in order to access the files on the drive you have to input your password and a new "harddrive" will appear under My Computer and you can set it too auto close after a certain time of no activity. This is part of the Acer Empowering package but im sure you can find other things like this on the internet but if anyone needs any help finding a free version of this then feel free to send me a message!

That seems like to much trouble. It seems really complicated.

Unfortunately it can still be found if people show protected system folders.
I have said that before. But since 99% have them set to hidden then your alright.

But it still may come up in the adress bar if you typed it their for the list of previously manually entered file paths. And I don't think it stops it popping up from "my recent Documents" either.

Can't you just tell people to right click the folder and change its attributes to hidden themselves instead of using the batch? I mean it's not like you're doing magic there.

Try it.

Right click a file/folder and set it to hidden. Then go to folder options and click 'view hidden folders and files'.

Try the same again with my method.

Come back to me when you've done that.

Yeah the safest way still is encryption by miles.

I completely agree, but this is a quick and simple method for hiding files away from parents and prying eyes - It takes quite a large amount of computer knowledge to find these files and folders.

Odd.. my comment disappeared, anyway I tried your method, it adds the attributes administrator, read-only, hidden and system. Pretty nifty if you ask me. Nice one of you!

I merged your double post, but at the exact same time, you deleted one of the posts. So it ended up deleting both posts.
Sorry, this almost never happens. :p

I can undelete them both if you want.

Hah :p, that has never happened to me before, leave them undeleted, it's not like they were better than the current one, thank you for your effort though!
