I think you and I could have a lengthy discussion about horror movie ethics, Mako, but needless to say, I don't think it's too distant an idea to see Jason with a bow and arrow -- after all, he was at at Camp Crystal Lake, and we've seen Jason use a harpoon with deadly efficiency in Part III. Actually, I rather enjoyed the recreation. The Friday the 13th series is probably one of my favorite film sagas of all time, and I think they did it great honor with the new retelling. Would I choose it over the first three? Of course not, but as a horror movie that doesn't try to do anything new (because I don't want these things to try anything new, because when they try something new, they fail), and that tries to please old slasher fans, it was right on.
As for other movies that I've seen this year, Taken was pretty good. While its plot was considerably fluffy, there was plenty of Liam Neeson ass-kicking going on, and that was good enough for me. I don't necessarily see how they could stretch the film into a series, but it was great while it lasted!
My biased view:
The Uninvited was awful. A pretty butt-smelly remake of what was otherwise a good movie in its original form.
The Unborn was just laughable. I love terrible, terrible "horror" movies. This did not disappoint, but the dog in the first two minutes with the mask on had me laughing hysterically.
I finally saw American Gangster, and Denzel Washington, while he always seems to play the same character, is as solid and as charismatic as ever.
I also saw Gladiator for the first time. A good movie, but it has aged a bit. Joaquin Phoenix was as outstanding as always, and Russell Crowe was ... eh, Russell Crowe.
Pojo, how was Push?
