Day and Night Incontinence during Hospital Stay

Two things from English experience. a lot of "undiapered" people are fearful of wetting or pooping in bed - especially as nursing staff cannot always get to them quickly enough - If you are diapered you don't have that worry, or even the indignity of being told "just go if you can't wait and we'll clean you later". Staff are incredibly busy and would probably rather have a known quantity like attending to diaper needs, than an unknown one of upset and embarrassed patients demanding time they don't have.

Hospitals are not like other places - at a out-patents waiting room I once saw a guy poop on the floor. No one turned an eyelid and both he and the floor were attended to with dispassionate and effective action designed to protect his feelings.

A few years ago I ended up in the hospital for a very painful uti and it started to affect my kidneys. I went in wearing a dry 24/7 and was roomed with an older guy who had a colostomy. When ever the nurses changed his bag (he was around 70 and was in pretty bad shape) the room would get smelly. The nurses were cool about it and would spray air freshner. As they left they walk past my bed and mouth the word "sorry" with a shrug of their shoulders. My condition deteriorated, my temp rose to dangerous levels and I was moved to the icu. When my kidneys actually began to fail they induced a coma and I was put on a ventilator. I was labeled as critical. I awoke a week later completely wiped out. I was groggy, uncomfortable and extremely weak. The nurses were very caring and compassionate. I was so weak I couldn't even feed myself. After feeding me I would be so exhausted that all I wanted to do was sleep. One nurse said "you're just like my kid at home. With a full belly you go right to sleep and fill your diaper." Probably not very professional but it did keep the mood light and I was diapered at admittance so I guess she thought I wouldn't be embarrassed. I wasn't and thought it was actually kind of funny. No surprise I did exactly what she said I would do. Sleepy with a full tummy, I filled my diaper as I drifted off. Postscipt: Everything turned out well, no lasting damage except perhaps my ego.

In my experience hospitals accept diaper wearing and as said previously changing a diaper is much less hastle than a wet or soiled bed.
Diaper stocked in hospital are often not the best quality, so I always take my own supply with me.

Hi,

In the psychiatric department I was not the only one diapered. Most of the time, there were other patients present, when I asked for a fresh diaper. One morning I was escorted by a nurse to a room of another female patient, where i was scowered and re-diapered. Hospital diaperes are not pretty absorbent.

When I had a broken hand joint, I was diapered by the nurse for three days after surgery.
