A bit of advice for Everyone, but especially newbies

Here follows a suggestion that can help make ADISC a tighter-knit community and an easy way to make your posts better!! Also to prevent your valuable posts from getting buried too quickly!

When you make a reference to something please cite references, supply links, provide examples, and if you express opinions - good or bad - about another member or bunch of members - please give evidence.

This is especially important when you refer to content in another post; it really doesn't take much time to open ADISC in a second window, so you can highlight the url and copy/paste it to your new post. Here are some reasons and examples why this is so important:

Example:

Advice on how to improve the website is always a positive thing, and the more people contribute their advice, the better an idea everyone gets where we should be moving.

But (there's always a but) right now, there's so much discussion on what to do, how to do it, what not to do, what has gone wrong, who is to blame etc etc that no one can keep up. In addition, the discussion is spread among three dozen threads. For instance, there's already a thread about "Cleaning up ADISC".

So my suggestion is:
- Try to keep all the suggestions in one spot. Those people responsible for actually deciding on and implementing any changes (Moo and the staff members) are only human and cannot click through three dozen threads to find that one good suggestion buried among those kazillion post
- Make sure you summarize your suggestions and don't type out a wall of text. Many people have complained that there's too much to read on ADISC to keep up, and another set of wall-o'-text-messages doesn't help.
- Before you post suggestions, collect all the ones you have and then neatly arrange them in one single post where a person with just one minute of time can find out easily what you want (i.e. highlight important parts in bold or underlined text)
- Attempt to separate suggestions for the staff (e.g. tighten moderation) and suggestions for the members (e.g. how to quote properly).

Absolutely. Even if some ideas won't work they should be aired.

Quite right!! And there are other reasons too for keeping complaints, compliments, and suggestions in one spot, to do with, for one thing seeing how widespread a given problem is.

- Make sure you summarize your suggestions and don't type out a wall of text. Many people have complained that there's too much to read on ADISC to keep up, and another set of wall-o'-text-messages doesn't help.
Well with an expanding site of course there is more to read. And some things require long posts (like many of our stickies.) Site organization becomes more important.
- Before you post suggestions, collect all the ones you have and then neatly arrange them in one single post where a person with just one minute of time can find out easily what you want (i.e. highlight important parts in bold or underlined text)
Very good point; good layout makes for better readability: like I have learned to put a space between paragraphs, use colors or boldface or size= 3 or other font to make important points stand out.

- Attempt to separate suggestions for the staff (e.g. tighten moderation) and suggestions for the members (e.g. how to quote properly).
Plus the use of

tags makes for readability; the main point can be left intact, with the explanations and in-depth argument hidden. You know - spoilers can be nested! Which I just did for the above post, and it does look a lot better.

Here is a suggestion I put in administrative stuff; below it I go into a bit more depth why I think it may improve site quality, and therefore should be strongly encouraged.

Upshot: let's make it site policy to provide links when we refer to something, and evidence when we accuse someone. Let's go out of our way to remind people when they fail to do so. Let's have the mods do this, and ask people to keep reminding each other. (Said reminders to cite evidence by linking would be given out in the spirit of friendly advice for the member's own benefit, not as negative criticism.)

Peach keeps admonishing people to try to improve the site; it is hard to improve the site without concrete ideas; here is one, as yet untried.

you guys should have a thread called "newbie questions" or something. I have a few newbie questions but arnt too sure where to ask them :)

(for example how do you get moved from newbie to regular user, how do you get the verified idenity tag in your user profile changed from no to yes, and do i need more access before i can upload images to the gallery?).

someone did give me the link for the verified idenity scheme here but i dont have enough access to view it :D

Another suggestion:

How about if we think someone is lying, keep it to ourselves because no one likes to be accused of being a liar when they aren't. It just makes this place look bad and it being filled with jerks. So people won't even see a point in posting about themselves if people are going to call them a liar or not want to post at all or leave this place. This is meant as a support community and it sure isn't support when you accuse someone of being a liar.

Most answers as to how the forum works (nowadays) can be found in the Wiki.
Category:About ADISC - ADISC Answers Wiki is the best starting point. Just click your way through the subsections and see if you can find what you're looking for.

I agree though that it would be helpful to have a sticky thread where newbies can ask their questions, rather than having many different threads in the Admin or Off-Topic forums.

The Verified-Identity scheme is only for Regulars or VIPs. That why you cannot access that information/view that thread. You'll have to wait until you become a Regular (won't be long now).

I've gotta say, considering the length of the posts and the (almost) perfect spelling and grammar, we can let the title slide, can't we?

Wait ... you mean actually source "facts" and "information" rather than just gum-flap? Mon dieu, how would we ever address or approach larger issues, or issues with scientific quantity, if we did that?

Quite right. We should round up all the incha-malek-chewal fancy-talkin' scientifical types and ban 'em or re-educate 'em, Maoist style. They are nothing but trouble and extra work, and not Socialist at all. Only party-members should be allowed to make posts over 10 lines.

Quite right; sleep deprivation is no excuse. Straight to Requests.

I'd not intended to grace this with a reply, but I will.
