I was recently playing around on the goodnites website and they are now claiming that 20% of kids aged 5-10 wet the bed. It seems like they keep increasing that number every few years. I remember as a kid they used to claim that 1 in 10 kids wet the bed. Not long after that they went to 1 in 9. The last few years they have gotten it down to 1 in 6. Now they have gone and doubled their original claim to 1 in 5.

Do you think the numbers are actually going up? Is the acceptance of such a condition just meaning that more people are owning up to the condition in medical research surveys? Do you think KC is just making up the numbers? Are they changing how they define wetting the bed? Anyone want to speculate about these changes in the claims? Or better yet, does anyone know where they are getting their research from?

There is an interesting graph here that may shed some light. It looks like, indeed, about 20% of kids at least 5 years old still wet the bed... but only 10% of kids at least 6 years old do. So the numbers change quickly if the target market age range changes just a little.

I think several things are at play here.
  1. People are starting to accept this more and not try and hide it or shame their kid. So even the kids that wet once a week or less that just got bitched out in the past are now getting to wear a diaper or pullup to bed even if they do not need it as often as others.
  2. The diaper companies are making it up to try to normalize using them even when it is not really needed so they can sell more diapers. Like to kids that only have accidents a few times a month or year and could be encourage to just remember to go to the bathroom when they first feel the urge instead of waiting until they can not hold it.
  3. The society we live in many people are either too damn lazy or two overworked to really work with their kids to potty train them and teach them to go find a restroom when they get the urge. Sadly it is easier to diaper them than to help them. Really sad but many kids don't have parents that care to make the time to spend on many important fundamental things.
  4. Lastly it is jut a throw away world so disposable underwear (pullups) are just easy and make sense!

Once a saw article which is abaut that UK kids being send to school still wearing diapers. They write abaut kids between age 5 to 7. They even mention kids 11yo wearing nappies!
Even 14yo have problem with toilet.
I wonder if those kids have real problem or is just laziness and parent fualt.
Either way looks like diapers manufacturers have a big market

When I was in school in ~90 if I came to class in diaper and somebody knows that I would have no life. I will be bullied and tested. So if only reason that I wear diapers is mine lazynes, school bullies quick teach me how to use toilet properly 😉
I understand that they are kids which have real problem and diapers in there cases are not choice but necessity.
Today we have more tolerance society which is good but sometimes this make problem like older healthly kids wering diapers to school because parents don't teach them how to use toilet properly.

I'd like to add another point as to why I think kids wet the bed much later into their teens these days.

I think kids have a much harder time these days what with social media pressures, friendships and bullying issues at school, due to many schools not having the time or resources too deal with bullying problems efficiently.

Mental well-being certainly plays a role in a child's bed wetting problems. We've certainly seen a trend when our children have been going through these issues.

Or maybe young diaper lovers. I keep reading even on ADISC where some parents are being more supportive and even supplying diapers. Of course I often wonder why I am even reading it when they are clearly under 18. I have No issues with ABDL's but I really do think parents are way to lax in parenting these days. Like a 4year old boy who says they are a girl and the parents raise them that away and buy them clothes and makeup. Sorry I just do not think 4 year old's or any kids should be making choices that are going to impact them the rest of their lives. Not even wearing diapers. They got their entire life adult lives to be who they want to be. I read these stories online and I just wonder how many young adults are in therapy because of this.

I don't know I should probably delete this because some people are going to tell me how wrong I am and accuse me of being prejudice towards a large group of people that I am not. I am not a hater of anyone. I just think this new age of parents that want to be best friends with their kids and not punish them or correct them is not healthy and it teaches them no skills to survive in the world. Any way I guess I kinda derailed this conversation but I feel it points back to the point you are making. I do have many gay friends even on here so people please do not accuse me of hating. Of course I have lost track of all the LGBTQIA and other titles they demand we know! (I had to google that so people please excuse me if saying gay is offensive because I am lost and can not keep up)

The way the statistics are presented are rather misleading, to the point I think they were aiming more for shock value than real world issues. You have one in ten headteachers that knew of one child between five and seven who had worn a diaper to school in the last year. There are a lot of unanswered questions on this. How many students does a headteacher oversee (considering they basically oversee the school); is it 100? 300? 1000?

A rough guess of two classes of twenty per year of age suggests 120 students. That means one in 1200 students has worn a diaper to school in the prior year. Not that they were in diapers daily, needing changes throughout the school day, but had worn one at some point through the year. Was it possible a kid who used them for bedwetting wore one to school one day? The possibilities are endless. Throw in there 4% (one in 25) senior staff knew of a child as old as 11 wearing a diaper. Again, how many students is this? Not a child in their class per se, but just know of a child. Again, two or three classes of twenty at a school, that's 60 children and only 1 in 25? So one in 1500 here? Oh, and one teacher knew of a student as old as 14 to 15 who had toileting trouble.

Seriously, the rate of bladder and bowel issues that can permeate our population and they're trying to raise alarm over less than a tenth of a percent that may have had occasional issues? Fearmongering at its finest.

That makes me worried about my sister. She's a single mom and her son's 3 1/2. She is a remote worker, so she gets to work from home, but she's always so busy. I do worry about his development, but know I should keep my nose where it belongs. I don't want to realize he's 5 and still needs them, but what can I do? BTW, that's a really cute diaper there in that picture, is it Chinese or Japanese? Either way, really cute, but crotch shots aren't allowed on this site, especially when we're talking about younglings. Whoever made this article with a dazzling diaper in such a promiscuous manner should really think about the message they're sending to people.

I would be surprised that so many 7 year olds are not yet potty trained and wear diapers to school. I did wear diapers to school until I stopped when I was 7 and was fully potty trained during the day, but I was the only one in my class who still wore diapers. Same was true for my sister at that age. She was the only kid wearing diapers. This was in the 1950's and I doubt that children today have more problems with potty training than they did in my day.

Children begin school younger in the UK, with reception class at 4 years old, so this may make a difference. Reception not compulsory but children must start school by age 5 however, almost all parents send children to reception year. I understand in the US kindergarten is at age 5 and first grade at age 6. In the Nordic countries many children start school even later at about 7 years old.
