I bought diapers from the store for the first time today. Previously, I've been stealing my brother's (he has a medical condition), but he's gotten so much better at not wetting the bed, my mom stopped buying them for him. So I was stuck with about 5 (maybe enough to last 3 days) left over.
So I went to the store about 30 minutes ago and bought some. And were they expensive! Tena's are $13.79 (that includes tax) for a pack of maybe 10 or so, and I get an allowance of $15, just enough for them with $3 left over.
Anyway, then the worst happened. My Self-scan station went and broke :| so the lady came over and was like "Would you like me to ring these up for you at another station?" and I was so shocked, because the whole time she didn't ask me about them one bit. I paid, and left, got home, and hid them in my normal hiding spot.
I think this went a little...too easy. I have a feeling something bad is going to happen. But I guess I'm just being paranoid.

Some tend to really panic over buying diapers over the fact that they might get caught. It really isn't that hard...it would be like buying a joke present for one of your friends if you were not a DL but DL's tend to associate buying diapers with something really bad and that is why their anxiety kicks in and they freak out.

It is great that some DL's don't act like this, and it is great that you got some diapers! What kind of Tenas were they?

good for you...

a lot of people think it's really difficult or stressful... when it's really not.

What makes you think that it should be hard? Is buying any other product in a store extremely difficult to do?
I just thought that it'd be...different, ya know? More questions asked? I dunno.

I agree with this. I'm not a DL, but I remember the first time I bought a soother and a bottle. I was freaking in my head and then I realized that I could be buying the items for ANYONE for ANY reason and that the store clerk didn't know me or anything about what was going on. I just kinda pretended I was buying the items for a friend's kid, in my head, and it went fine. When one of you guys buys diapers, for all the store clerk knows, you're buying them for your poor old bed ridden granny or something. Why do they care what you're buying or why?

Most stores tell their cashiers to try and avoid awkward moments in order to make their customers happy

Congrats, i think your situation and way of hadling this was better than the way i had hoped to handle my own. (Long Trenchcoat + Pocket Knife + Diaperbag)... ok out of words... uhh yeah... try not to find a to obvious place to hide em, generally inside of something is good.

The things I would impress on people that are nervous is this:

1) Act like it is no big deal and it will be no big deal. Think about how much these clerks get paid and how many people they see. Be polite, but not overly friendly. You want them to forget you the second you leave. Every now and then you will get an overly friendly clerk, which can really send the adrenaline rushing if you are not prepared....

2) Have a cover story ready..... I generally have two: one for my 'family' members and one for co-workers. I am running an errand, if I run into a family member then I am doing it as a favor for a co-worker, otherwise I am doing it for my sister, or cousin.

I actually got out of the habit of having just a simple one liner for awhile as I bought at a place where I knew no co-workers or family shopped (part of town) and then the clerk asked me how old the little one was. It didn't help that I was really tired and not paying attention I answered "What?" with a look like "Why in the world would you ask me that!?" and then remembered I was buying pampers. After moment of panic I mentally dusted off my cover story. Point is be prepared, it will NEVER hurt to not tell your cover story but it may be horrible if you don't have one and need it. Plus I have always been a spy freak so it is kinda like that :)
