I have always taped my diaper from the bottom up. I read that top down is the proper way. I have tried it and still can't get the proper fit. I wear 3 tab Depends because they are easy to get. When I tape one bottom side the other side doesn't cover my butt the same as the other. Should I try a new diaper? It seems like this should be pretty simple. I am afraid to order anything because I don't want to get it wrong. My first were industrial grade 3 tape and then Attends and then Depends. If you respond, then thank you in advance. I have just come back after many months and would like to be a part of the community. Like most I am alone with this.

It's way easier to align everything by taping the tops first imo. Use the wetness indicator as a reference to line it up on center with your belly button. Then, still using the wetness indicator as a reference, line up the top tapes to be equidistant from it on each side. Once you've got them taped correctly, take a good look at it and memorize how far away from the midline they are to make it easier on yourself next time. Then from there do the rest of the tapes as you like.

I've also found that with depends especially, tighter isn't always better. Leaving the elastic parts loose so that the elastic can do its job helps a lot in terms of preventing leaks.

The rest of the advice I've got really depends on how the diaper fits you. If it's small on you then there's a completely different optimal taping pattern than if the diaper is large on you.

Well, this article is actually pretty neat : How to Put On a Diaper

I don't use 3-tabs depends myself, I only ever used diapers with 2 tabs on each side and I'm basically doing what the article is showing. Usually when taping up, I use one hand to hold the diaper in place and one hand to tape the bottom tapes in a snug fit with my legs in a <> shape.

In which position do you usually do it ? I myself find that lying is the easiest way, but some people prefer to sit or stand or even lean against a wall.

By the way, why is it bothering you, is it uncomfortable or do you experience leaks ? Because as long as your diaper does the job, it's not a big problem if it's not put in a perfect way.

heh, that article drives me nuts because that guy is clearly the correct size for that abena. For me, the middle tapes nearly overlap and I can run the bottom tapes halfway underneath. The smalls go to the opposite extreme, plus they don't make them plastic backed anymore. The only positive about being in between sizes like that is that I've got a ton of experience messing with optimal taping schemes.

You might want to double check that. I received 2 bags of plastic-backed M4 yersterday ;)

You can buy them :
- here, if you live in America : xpmedical
- here, if you live in Europe : Save Express

Regarding the in-between size, it highly depends on the brand you are using. I'm in-between size for molicare (S-M) but i fit perfectly in Abena. You should check this page and see what brand might fit you best : Adult Diaper Review and Testing

irnub is correct that the *small* Abena is no longer available in plastic.

M4 = Medium Level 4. M4 and L4 are manufactured in plastic, nothing else.

Thanks for the link. I think I do put them on to tight. I like the feeling of being bound like that. I do lay down to diaper myself. I can't imagine how or why anyone would diaper themselves any other way. I guess in emergency circumstances. When I sit I can feel one side creasing into my backside. That is why I was wondering if I was doing something wrong. I do have a leaking is a problem. My first diaper was Depends/Attends/ hospital type 3 tape white diapers. I am kind of stuck on that. I know that I need to change. Do you have any suggestions. Thanks for being so kind. Would you be my friend. I have none. I hope thats not weird.

You might want to re-read the bit you quoted without chopping off the first half:

If you have a source for plastic backed S4s I'd be impressed :p

Why does that drive you nuts? My fear is that I buy a bunch of diapers that don't fit or ridiculous blue tapes that cover the front of what should be a clean nice white diaper. What's your story? Please.

I always do bottom first.
It seems to make a better fit and its more comfy to me that way.

I say do what works best for you.

I think I do put them on too tight. I like the feeling of being bound like that.
It all depends on what parts are tight. When most people say "tight" they mean cinching the tapes down as much as possible. Past a certain point, it adds little return for the amount of stress placed on them. Think of it how much tension is required on a long cable (like a power line) to hold it tight over a gap. Once you pass that point, all you're doing is making the tapes more likely to pop off or stretch out the diaper, which will make it less tight. Here's an example of what I'm talking about if you want to see hard numbers: Tension Increase in Ropes due to Angle

The biggest thing I've found that causes leaks is pulling the crotch up too snug and taping in such a way as to pull on the elastic in the leg gathers. Leave a bit of room for the bottom to sag, and enough slack in the leg gathers so that they can conform around your leg. Then you can make the rest of the diaper as tight as you'd like with minimal change of leakage.

I do lay down to diaper myself. I can't imagine how or why anyone would diaper themselves any other way.

Standing is faster, quicker, and easier to line everything up. Plus it's about the only way available to do it if you're anywhere but in your house. At first I had to lean back against a wall to help hold the back up, but once I figured out the locations for the top tapes I can do it standing up anywhere (and even in the dark).

The problem I run into laying down is that the back of the diaper is trapped against the floor or mattress, so if it's very easy to get it out of alignment and not realize until I stand up.

Add me to the bottom-first list. It just works best for me, and I think a perfect alignment there is a good indicator for the entire diaper. Then again, I tend to prefer the diaper to be slightly higher in front, for better protection when sitting. :)

I'm also of the bottom first school. Getting those on right allows for adjusting the upper ones to get a good fit. Also getting the bottom tapes right is the most important, I think because if I don't get them just right, then sometimes when the diaper expands after wetting they can slip a little bit and stick to the skin at the edge of my leg, which is like peeling off a band-aid (unfun).

The bottom tapes are most important, but it's easier to get those right if you get the tops right. And the tops are just plain easiest to put on right since there are so many features to line them up with (wetness indicator for centering, where the padding ends for vertical height).

Are you guys who are doing bottom first putting them on while laying down?

bottom up, and I normally stand to apply, I have found angling the bottom tapes up a bit to work nicely, and yes, too tight simply doesn't cut it

everywhere ive always read says it proper to do the bottoms first and then the tops last, i guess it just helps to make the best seal around the legs, but honestly im OCD and can almost never get it to fit and feel right doing bottom first. After making a similar post here around 6 months ago, i learned that whats really important is the proper placement of the bottom tapes, the order doesnt really matter. So now i do my top tapes first to hold the diaper in place around my waist and then focus on getting the bottoms just right(using a 4 tape abena M4). for you though using depends 6 tapes, i'd actually do the middle tapes first to get it held in place, and then whatever side u do next just make sure that u get a good seal and u will probably want to angle your tapes slightly towards center.

I use the depends 3 tape as well...personally, my body shape does not really let me line the diapers up proper taping top first and downwards, and i find that, taping from the bottom up, you have lots more room to work with making sure the leg holes are tight than if the top two tapes are already done up. I will sometimes just wear these wherever i go that day because of lack of washroom (except for going #2, i hate the feeling), and this has saved me from leaks quite a few times. Also, i would like to try a pack of these M4's everyone talks about. Where in Saskatchewan, Canada could i pick up a pack if available? Or a good pack of abena's...either one is fine for me.

If bottom-first is the wrong way to do it, then I don't wanna be right. :p The first time someone else diapered me, they did tops first, and it just didn't work. The diaper was almost too loose for me to even wear.

For the rare occasion that I use a multi tape diaper, I do the bottom tapes first. But for the most part, I almost exclusively wear single tape, whether its my cloth AIO's, or on a rare occasion, SDK's or Cushies.
