An Awkward and Long-winded Hello.

Hi! Not really sure what to put here to introduce myself, so forgive me if I waffle on a bit. I'm a DL/IC from the UK, I'm currently studying IT at college, hoping to specialise in software at some point in the near future. I work part time as a software developer and web designer as well as trying to fit in a fairly hectic lifestyle, doing a lot of volunteer work. My other hobbies include: taking an active interest in both politics and religion (not really related to the rest of the post, but I felt it was worth a mention), hiking, camping, bushcraft, and volunteer work. I'm planning to go to Uni in the next couple of years to study software engineering.

I guess I realised I was a DL a couple of years ago; I've had issues with nocturnal enuresis (bed wetting) on and off for my entire life, so there was only really one solution when I went camping or went away with friends, but I always felt different, almost outcast because of it, even though nobody else knew (having said which, I have always had an inexplicable emotional attachment to the idea of wearing diapers - probably a deeply seeded complex to keep the Freudians among us entertained for decades). As I've grown older, I've learnt to accept who I am (even if others probably would not, especially being a part of a predominantly Christian community (not knocking Christianity, I'm a Christian myself and I know that I've found my personal beliefs very helpful, but many Christians aren't as open-minded as you'd expect.)) and I've found support from reading forums like this in the past.

Personally I see myself as an extremely awkward mixture of fifty percent extroverted (being able to write all this) and fifty percent introverted (taking this long to post anything). I generally keep this side of myself very quiet and solitary, so it's taken a lot to write this because I knew I'd end up waffling on about nonsense if I did (see ALL of the above), but I decided it's time to join the community in a controlled environment (because most of the sites out there scare the living daylight out of me!) and to at least attempt to have some outward presence, taking a huge leap forward in my journey of self-acceptance by doing so. If you've read this far, I'm very sorry for writing this drivel. - Thanks! TheNerdyPenguin.

Hey NerdyPenguin, welcome to ADISC!

Actually your intro post is a very good one, it's pretty concise and on-point while still giving a rounded picture of who you are.

I personally have very little to say about IT or software engineering, however it seems like half the ABDL community is in IT somehow or other, so you should find plenty of people you can bond with about that topic ;-)

I'm glad you've found ADISC a less scary place... we seem to do quite well with people who are both IC and DL. I'm glad your self-acceptance has improved, lots of people find the same thing from being involved in a community like this.

Don't worry, your post wasn't drivel. Hope to see you writing more soon! :)

Hi NP and welcome to the site. I too did IT for a junior high school. It did that for a number of years until they took the IT people out of the schools. Then they shifted me into helping math students, which over time, got really boring...haha. Anyway, welcome to ADISC.

Hardly drivel, it was a well-written introduction. :) And welcome!

What language do you most like the best and/or are writing code in right now?

I personally prefer Java if I have a choice; for scripting, I tend towards Perl. For the most part, I prefer them simply because I've got more experience in them than other languages. Right now, my job primarily involves writing automated tests of a web site.

There's a programming group, as well : https://www.adisc.org/forum/group.php?groupid=106

Good (Very Early) Morning,

Just call Me Caitian X.
I am not a software person.
I am mostly into the low-level digital/analog hardware.
Although retired, I still tinker.

Personally, I've never had the time to learn Java (although it is in my todo list - somewhere underneath creating my own OS). I have a history of working in C-based languages and used to work mainly in C, however, I decided to specialise in C# over last summer since its growing in popularity and cross-platform support (I do web dev as well as app dev on Windows and Linux at work, so it made sense to learn a language which could handle both). Although the latest project I've been working on builds on the WordPress back end to create a fully featured CMS (with lots of extra features built in), so I've had to learn PHP to integrate the project into that.

Thanks for the reply!

Hello new friend:) I'm glad you've joined. :D

Welcome NerdyPenguin!

You've come to the right place :)

Hi NP

I am also DL/IC from the UK, your intro is excellent, its very concise and tells us all about who you are, it's very hard to write about a subject which is not openly talked about in our normal daily routine, but you can just be yourself here, because we all have lots in common, and no one judges us.

Welcome friend.
