Thread: This Is What I Was Afraid Would Happen

Unhappy This Is What I Was Afraid Would Happen

We've had some threads on racial issues of late, so there's no doubting the topic is very much on people's minds since Obama was elected.

The night he won the nomination I told my wife it wouldn't surprise me if racial hate crimes in the US started to escalate. Sure enough they are, just as I expected. Here's just one article about it. - WGN Radio - AP Top Stories - In talking that night I also mentioned to her that I hope he keeps himself and his family well guarded because I know what can happen, and I honestly fear someone might try to take his life. Racists aren't all a lot of hot air, they can mean business! The events of year 1968 are just something most of you read in history books. I lived through the assassination of MLK and the ensuing race riots which took place that year. NO WAY do I want to see 2009 become a repeat of 1968. That was one ugly year in US history which still lives in my memory!

I sincerely hope things will blow over after extremists get over the initial shock of having a black president. I'd like to be optimistic that his doing a decent job in office will get racists to somehow be more accepting of him. But, as mentioned on another thread active at the moment, racism is always here with us. It goes underground and appears to be dormant for many years, then something happens for it to reawake in all it's ugliness. I hope for the best outcome in the months ahead, but fear for the worst. I just hope the unthinkable doesn't occur and set race relations in this country back 50 years, if not more. I'm so glad my parents didn't teach my sisters and I to hate anyone because of race, nationality, or any other senseless reason. Unfortunately, too many parents (still) do from what parts of this report brought out.

There's been people that wanted to kill bush. There was even a fictional movie about his assassination. Everyone's worried about Obama but not about Bush. Why is that? Oh yeah its beacuse he's black everyone loves making a big deal about how "black" he is. Maybe if we as a country and world didn't make this a big deal it wouldn't be a big deal right? I am not saying that saying having a "black" guy as president is historic and cool. But what did you expect the racists to do about it? Hide in their little holes?

Frankly I am worried about the same thing and it will be horrible if that happened simply since someone would of killed our president. Not that someone killed our BLACK president but simply since he is our president.

Anyways the point is if you make something a big deal expect it to maybe get out of hand.

Wow, that's so rediculous. Who cares about race? The fact that Obama's black has nothing to do with his ideals and beliefs.

    To racists: Fuck you.

I always wanted to get a t-shirt that said fuck racism but I just never got around to it. Maybe now is a good time.

Racism is an extremely complicated issue. EXTREMELY complicated.

Ill start off by saying that I am 100% against it... But...

Everybody is racist. At least a little bit. Everybody makes stereotypical judgments based on race.

Obama is a big step forward, but there is no way we are going to see the end of racism in our lifetimes.

The problem arises when people don't see this point of view, which is unfortunately a large number of people.

I'm an observationalist, not a racist, and I only judge people by what they do and how they conduct themselves. I was not an Obama supporter, but race has nothing to do with whether or not I support a candidate. It's sad that there are people who can make a blind decision based on race alone. I even have friends that are black that said they were voting for Obama based on that fact alone, so I think it goes both ways. Lots of people made uninformed decisions in this election, but that's part of the system too.

Unfortunately, to these white supremists, having a black man in office is a very BIG deal. There's probably been several death threats made to different presidents over the years, someone even attempted to kill Ronald Reagan, but racial hate is another extremely dangerous animal altogether. These people are filled with so much hatred all they see is color, not the person behind the skin. You can't reason with people of that mentality. They are ignorant beyond belief. If this was National Socialist Germany, these same radicals would be eagerly hunting down Jewish people to persecute. They've got the same beliefs, basically - white supremacy. Why they're still so bigoted after all this time, I have no idea. It seems to be ingrained in them, almost like it's part of their genetic makeup. That's why I have such a sick, sinking feeling thinking of what the next year could possibly bring. The US is anything but *United*, and when it comes to race relations there's many pockets where it's about as un-United as it can possibly be. I've seen too many acts of racial violence in my lifetime to dismiss these threats as not being very serious, and truly fear for the next president's life. I just hope the secret service does an excellent job in protecting him and his family from any harm.

Don't forget about the black panthers. Pretty much a reversal of white racism made to counter racism. <_>

Like Korey said everyone is a little bit racist or thought of racist ideas. We also know every race has faced racism.

Also the US is united. The united states of America all he states are united and ruled under one government then they have branches of local government. We are not called the united people of America, we never have been united as a people and we never will. However most of us can feel one way, such as the surge of patriotism after 9/11. Of course now that has been driven back down to your side is wrong and my side is right.

I think it will take another attack of that level if not more to get us "united" on that again.
