Thread: How do I explain being a Brony?

Default How do I explain being a Brony?

Don't rightly know where to post this topic to be honest, so I'm just going to post it here in the off topic.

Anyways here's the story: About 20 minutes or so ago some friends of mine stopped by my place to drop off a Christmas gift they had gotten me. So after greeting them and all that good stuff I went upstairs to unwrap my gift which is a Brony Wallet (Which is 20% cooler). My mom wanted to see what they got me so I showed it to her and she thought it had something to do with World of Warcraft, in hindsight I probably should have said it did, but I really hate lying to people.

She decided to ask the $100,000 question which was "What's a Brony?" I told her that I'd explain it all another day, and that I didn't want to explain it tonight of all nights. So I'm just kind of looking for a way to explain the fandom without being painted as some kind of deviant weirdo.

I've been in a simialr situation when my mom asked me why I was watching MLP on netflix. I just kind of made up a lie that it was a joke but my mom just thought it was really funny that I was watching it. The best way is to just be honest. Sorry that's probaly not the most helpful answer. :/

My parents know that I'm into ponies. It's sort of a running joke in the family. It's not the strangest thing that they know I'm into, so I guess it wasn't to hard to tell them.
Just go ahead and tell them. At worst it might get you some stares for a minute or two.

Well from what I heard some friends talk about "Bronys" is more like a troll? (might not be the right word) for a label to start some weird online fad. Like I do not see people calling them selfs bromon (bro+pokemon) or or bromily guy (Bro + family guy) so I do not get the point of the label other than guys showing they are proud for liking a girly show? (Me asking this question is the reason I said the label is like a "troll" thing, I heard someone refer it to that before. The person that said it was like he did not care who likes MLP or not but found the label weird)

I do not get the fear of explaining you like watching something. My mom let me watch whatever I wanted pretty much since I was little. What I would just say is that brony is a label for a fan base for guys liking my little pony. But my suggestion is based what I experienced with my mom's feelings over what I like to watch, and her feelings over anything I watch is she don't care. (I really do not remember being restricted from anything, it was all my dislikes and likes, but she exposed me to some things that I end up liking like star wars. There was one thing I was told not to view when my mom was with her ex. He got cheater cable box to view any channel and this meant including the porn channel. They told me not to view it and I didn't. I was left a lone a lot so I could of if I really wanted but didn't. I think my friends wanted to peak an interest of it with them not home and I went in the other room.)

Only reason I am explaining all this is so you understand why it would be so easy for me to explain what a brony is. She really does not care what I like to watch.

Plus if she sees me watching girly stuff now she would care even less as far as surprised reactions since she knows about my transgender issues now.

I have seen questions about MLP in the BA/DF/AB sections so if you have new questions or threads you want to make it seems like you can post them there. I also posted something in the LG section because the thread was to address "girl" feelings over the brony label.

adding more why it could be easy:

We went to mall of America (Before suggesting I was gay) and she had no negative comments of me buying Pretty Sammy (Magical girl spin off from Tenchi Muyo) She also got to hear it because in the hotel room I watched it on my laptop. I might even shown her a few clips "Hey watch this" when I thought something was funny.

Then there was a time she bought and rented anime for me like sailor moon.

"I enjoy the TV show MLP:FiM. Some people, who are rather devoted fans of the show, refer to themselves as Bronies as a way of signifying their love of the show and for a bit of a joke. It's nothing creepy or anything but rather just a fan club of sorts about a TV show."

Just say you like the show and explain that a brony is just a term used to describe fans of the show by the internet, there is nothing weird about it after all.

As long as you don't come off as obsessed with it, you should just get strange looks and a drawn out "Okayyyyyyyyyy" by your parents.

I asked my mom about this and like I said earlier, her reply was "I don't care" I explained it was a show called my little pony and that fans of it call them self bronys.

    Brb forgot to explain pegasisters.

So after explaining all that my Mom said:

The can call themselves a pile of s**** I do not care.... Can I watch my movie now?
So explaining what MLP is to my mom and what a brony would not be an issue for me... because I know she would not really care XD

If you Google Bronies, you'll find it's a very large base, mostly consumed by computer nerds. Our 4 year old grandson loves MLP and his dad was somewhat annoyed until he Googled it, only to find all the computer programmers who are into it. Then suddenly it was okay as he's a programmer who is very successful.

I can't believe this has actually gotten to the point where people have to honestly explain themselves or even 'come out' as being one. Jesus. Just say you like a cartoon and that's it. There is no reason to over complicated liking a cartoon this much.

How do I tell my family that I like playing video games?
How do I tell my family that I love a Disney movie at the age of 19 enough to sign along with the lyrics?

Oh. I know how. Because it's a silly little thing and no one cares at all. Now, if I slap a label and make a fanbase out of it, then suddenly people are going to be even more curious rather than saying "oh you like a child's cartoon, okay." Instead, you've just affiliated yourself with some sort of internet group and now people are going to wonder about it because there's a name for it. This is why labels are stupid.

Just say you like a kid's cartoon. Really. There's no need to say you're a "brony." You're not coming out as a sexuality or anything that's life changing. You're, uh, you know, a person who likes a cartoon. By just saying "it's just from a show I like," you've just saved yourself some silly little explanation.

You don't understand my situation. My parents are very very very disapproving of certain aspects of my life. I made this topic for some advice and you've covered all the bases, Thank you sir.
