Thread: Athiests Against Christmas

    Default Athiests Against Christmas

While eating at a restaurant in Hersperia CA. The O'Reilly Factor was on and he was interviewing an Athiest that was trying to get Christmas banned in the USA. He stated that Christmas should be changed to Winter Solstice because Christmas involves religion and complained about people forcing their religion on him.

I'm definitely not religious but Christmas time is celebrated by many religions and local heritage. There's a lot more than Jesus in Christmas and people like him should just step aside and not be so ignorant. He also complained about everything being closed on Christmas. He said that the holiday shouldn't influence the federal holiday list.

I see Christmas as a time to be with your family and friends. A time of year that has everyone thinking about someone besides themselves. It's also another day where families sit down together at the dinner table and eat some awesome food. It serves as an extra day of rest away from the stress of everyday life.

Even though I'm not Christian, I take advantage of this day and will always be my favorite holiday.

Anyone else see that interview and care to comment about it?

What do other Athiests here think about Christmas?

Well Christmas IS Winter Solstice with a cheap Christian sticker on top of it, but it's not like it actually matters. People rarely even celebrate Christmas in a way that involves Christianity at all. Some people are just petty.

I don't pledge allegiance to Queen Victoria, nor do I have a harvest to give thanks for but I'm still more than happy to enjoy these days off and spend them as I see fit, and I'm happy to do this on Christmas and Easter as well. The music, extended family gatherings and slightly-higher-than-average level of commerce peddling annoy me, but not the very loose connection with Christianity.

I find it sad that Christmas has lost its true meaning.

What true meaning? It was some weird Christian hijacking of Winter's Solstice. Sure it got a whole lot more commercialised, but it's really just an excuse to get together and celebrate with family or whatever.

Yea...that where I almost stopped reading...atheists don't have a war on religion and like everyone else they aren't complaining about the days off that they get. The O'reilly factor goes out and finds the 10 extremists that atheism has (since most atheists will tell you, we really just don't give a shit) and puts them on his show so that Christians and the like will think that we hate them for having religion. And the he uses people's fears of "oh my god, there's a war on Christmas!" to warp people's attitudes about legislation, or says something like "this only happens in the crazy liberal minds" to further fear of the Democratic Party and create a riff in our society. Msnbc will also do this with religious crazies as well. It's television for god sakes, it's used for ratings which translate into money...don't take everything at face value. There will always be extremists, and there will always be people trying to exploit them for political or financial gain.

I Repeat, there is NO war on Christmas

Right wing christian media (fox news) guys are simply going out and finding the nuts to put on tv inorder to make all atheists (and democrats) look bad. The problem is not atheists, Christians, or even the atheist that is against Christmas, the problem is with the hatred Fox "news" spreads for the purpose of supporting the idea of oppression for profit in our country.

I celebrate it and it's about the decorations and buying stuff for my boy. I also like the music. I find the decorations beautiful.

Christmas is not some weird hijacking of winter solstice, It's the birth of Christ, hence Christ-mas. Besides the winter solstice isn't until December 21'st, Last I checked Christmas was on the 25'th, same with last year and the year before that.

Christmas is false! Jesus was born in the spring and the early christian hierarchy needed to end a December "pagan" holiday so they thought up Christmas. Though I do not currently celebrate it I respect the right of others to do so without my trying to interfere.
