    Default Internet Speed

Couldn't find a open internet speed thread so I thought I'd start a new one.

Sadly I have the top speed Fairpoint offers in my area.

    How sad is this? :-(

We're supposed to get 7 Mb/s download an 640 Kb/s upload...I told the roomie we should switch to Eastlink! I was getting often in excess of the 20Mb/s download speed when I was with them. *cries* We're definitely gonna upgrade, even if I have to break both his arms to do so.

And BellAliant will tell their customers they have the 'best' internet service in the province.

    Having a good day today:

Normally it's closer to 2 or 3 (my ISP claims it's "7" mbits, but never got that)

as speedtest.net requires the downloading of malware, my results are from a more local source:

i wonder who's got the slowest 'broadband'?

On the malware thing, far as I know it doesn't require anything installed to work. A while back they were infected with malware themselves, which tried to serve fake AV software to users of the site .. but I don't think they've ever intentionally tried to put malware on your machine.

On the speed thing.. check your SNR at the modem. When I first got my DSL hookup I got speeds like that. Ended up being poor line quality (SNR was in the 6 range and line attenuation was 55). Installing a splitter and filter where the service came into the house and running a direct line to the modem fixed the problem. If that's all greek.. call your ISP and they should do it for you, or at least confirm it as the problem.

it requires 'flash 10'. i class all Adobe products as malware (they're just useless junk that slows your pc down).

it's okay, i'm in the UK (classed as 'rural'). 60% of rural areas suffering slow broadband, says FSB - uSwitch.com
we're on old copper wires all the way to the exchange (plus, our line used to be/still is tapped by SIS). only those on 'cable' get decent connections - and that cable stops about 5 houses down the road.
to be honest, though, i think the companies involved purposely keep speeds slow and muddy the real speed issue in order to overcharge users for 'faster' packages.
