Assuming you're running Windows... You can get rid of junk files with CCleaner (personally I'd avoid using the registry cleaning component of it, though -- correcting registry errors automatically doesn't work well in my experience) . Then maybe run a scan with (the free version of) MBAM (just to make sure you reallllly don't have any viruses/malware, etc.). You could install SecuniaPSI to ensure that all your applications are up-to-date, then have a look at the following registry keys to see what programs run on startup and (with help from Google), whether you can safely remove them (I usually create shortcuts on the desktop for anything I remove just in case I want to start the program manually, or want to restore the registry entry).

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

Try downloading and running "Defraggler". It works way better then windows defrag.

    Defraggler - Download

Also try "Wise registry cleaner" it can be used to remove old, unneeded registry entries.

Wise Registry Cleaner - Best Free Registry Cleaner - speedup slow PC in one minute

Both programs can be downloaded and used for free.

The most fail-proof way is to restore your computer to factory settings. It will reset your computer to the factory settings just like the day you bought it. It will reconfigure your hard drive and wipe your cache clean and all cookies or saved settings you have done. It is however the most complete way to speed up your computer but I would make sure you save your pics/music/etc. to a mobile source such as a flash drive and make sure you have the cd software for the things you want to reinstall once restored. I have done this a few times and personally would not deal with quick fixes. You can find instructions on google. It's easy except for reapplying all of your software and pref's later but the relults are amazing.

You are suggesting isn't smart. It's murder. All the memory, fun, sadness....the porn over the years. Gone!... But I think they can put their differences behind them... for speed... You monster.

Do what I do... throw more money at the problem!

Just kidding. Lots of good suggestions above. Upgrading your RAM/processor/video card is more fun though. :P
