Thread: New Audio/Video setup

    Default New Audio/Video setup

So, I'm thinking of a more practical (for me) setup for my TV. I'm unmarried and live with my parents so therefore I need not worry about a home theater configuration.

    Right now I currently have:

    WOW Cable Box
    +connected to a
    Toshiba VCR/DVD Recorder
    +connected to a
    JVC I'art TV.

The VCR/DVD Recorder is ok, but the DVD recording system is unreliable. Therefore I'm giving it to my grandmother, and instead hope to have the following soon:

    WOW Cable Box
    +connected to a
Panasonic AG-1980 VCR (top of the line in 1997)
    +connected to a
    Hauppage PVR (via A/V cable)
    AND
    JVC I'Art TV. (via coaxial)

I plan on recording on DVD's by transferring video from the Hauppage to my Macbook Pro, where I can process it for editing. That way when converting VHS to DVD, I have a more reliable recording medium.

What do you think of this setup? Comments, criticisms, concerns over generation loss?

Sounds cool, but manually mastering DVDs on your MBP sounds like a lot of work... is there much point storing it on optical media these days? Why not digitize it and store it electronically?

Realize that I would prefer this over my current DVD recorder, which doesn't give me an option of transferring to my computer and whose error rate is VERY HIGH.
I want archival copies of my parents home movies.

That's what I plan to do with 60% of my VHS content, so that I may share it. What I've had to do recently is make a DVD copy of a movie and then use Cinematize to extract the video, and that is a pain in the @$$.

Thats cool. These things are never as straight forward as they should be, expecially when working between multiple formats.
