Thread: Gambling

    Default Gambling

The topic is this: Do you ever gamble? If so, what games? How often, how much, and with whom? Regardless of whether or not you do, what is your opinion on it? Should it be legal? socially acceptable? Discuss.

As for myself, I do place monetary bets with friends and family (nothing more than I'm willing to lose, though) on things like the Stanley Cup playoffs. Also, I regularly play Texas Hold'em with some friends for small money ($5-20 per person). Hell, I've even put money on a game of Monopoly before. It is a lot of fun, but it isn't something I'd say I'm addicted to or anything.

I think it does have potential, generally speaking, to become a problem in people's lives if they aren't careful, but I do think that [American] gambling laws as a whole should be relaxed.

    How about you?

O.O its ilegal in usa? im from colombia, and I usually gamble in school with my friends. I play Texas Holdem and Blackjack. I usually play in casinos too, here gambling its not ilegall. I play poker with my friends, and sometimes i go with them to the casinos. I think gambling is great, but you must be careful and know when to stop it. I usually bet 20 dollars with my friends, when i go to a casino the max bet i have do is 150 dollars ( that was crazy), but i must say i have good luck in this kind of games, i havent loose money, i usually beat my friends, and in casinos never loose (i usually win 10-20 dollars at the end) =P
Sorry but my englisj its not very good XD

Poker is a game of skill played for money, rather than gambling. Yes, that is a real, meaningful distinction, with significant legal implications.

As I've discussed previously, up until Black Friday, I was an online poker reg. I have made a decent amount of money from poker, mass-multitabling SSNL 6max (small stakes no-limit holdem six-person cash tables, where "small" = $100 or $200 buy-ins). I've 12-tabled before and had 4 figures across my tables plenty of times - my conception of what it means to win or lose "a lot" or "a little" bit of money at poker is probably very different than most people's.

I used to play the lottery, but I have terrible luck. Because of that I almost never gamble. I don't care if others do, it's just that I'm doomed when it comes to risk taking.

The only gambling I do is virtual Texas Hold 'Em at a restaurant nearby. Keep in mind it's virtual money, too.
When I was 11 I accidentally went all in with nothing in my hand. On the last card put in, I got a ten and ended up winning the pot with pair of tens or something. Or it was a flush of some kind. Not sure. It was FOREVER ago!
I ended up that game winning with 22,000+ chips. Winner!

The short version is that here, it's illegal when it's not regulated, which is code for when the government isn't getting a cut.

New Jersey has one of the largest gambling towns in the country outside of Vegas. A few years ago, there was a government shutdown in which gambling monitors were among the workers furloughed. Every casino in Atlantic City had to close- they were pissed.

But anyways, I love love love Blackjack.

I have a sister in law who plays blackjack semi-professionally. I've been meaning to get some lessons sometime.

Don't get me started on the legality of poker in the US. It's a mess. I can talk intelligently on it for half an hour easily.

Basically, it's an issue of us having laws at the federal level written in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, when gambling across state or international lines would have meant that it was illegal for the provider to be providing those services under the laws of their jurisdiction. Our laws at the federal level do not touch players and are not equipped to handle the case of a provider sitting in an offshore tax haven which is licensing them to take bets worldwide. At the state level, most gambling statues are about a century old and use definitions which would seem to exclude games of skill, like poker. Taxes on winnings suck at the federal level (report gross winnings as income, take gross losses as itemized deductions, which artificially inflates gross income disqualifying you for various tax breaks), and range from awesomely nothing at the state level to income taxes on gross winnings with no deduction for gross losses. It's an absolute mess.

Casino gambling games are more likely illegal at the state level, but not at the federal level. Federal law specifically outlaws sports betting with the Wire Act from the 1960s.

Every couple of years, my wife and I will go to Las Vegas, often meeting her sister or other relatives there. When we go, we usually set aside a few $100's each for gambling. I enjoy most of the table games, but rarely come out ahead. In fact, I just enjoy playing, and pretty much assume I'm going to play until I'm out of money. Might as well be a part of the travel expenses.

There are casinos near me, but it's never occurred to me to spend any time there. When I'm at home, the reality of how my money ought to be spent is right in front of my face, and I have a hard time thinking about gambling.
