Default Anybody ever explored the deep aka dark web?

Well, I recently downloaded tor and got curious and started to explore. Honestly, it isn't anything special iMO. People keep talking about all of the bad things they find on there, but I have yet to find anything illegal or morally wrong. So... has anybody here ever been brave enough to explore the deep web??

The "dark web" is so called because it isn't found through regular searching. If you can plug <bad shit> into google and get to it .. it's not in what one would consider a dark web.. it's in "the web" ;p

Also worth noting tor itself is just an anonymity engine .. it's doesn't give you access to anything you couldn't get to directly, it just makes it harder to track.

"Dark web" is a really vague term. Pardon my soapbox but I want to explore what I know.

I am currently using Tor all the time, because I'm stuck using someone else's open wireless network. Tor accomplishes two things for me; it encrypts the traffic from me to the network, and it hops around the network so it's not possible to get the IP address of where I'm actually at right now. The #1 biggest mistake people make is they forget it does not encrypt the connection from the network to the website they're talking to. That's the job of SSL (it kinda puts the S in https). Without that, the person running a Tor exit node (the computers that allow people to talk to the rest of the Internet from inside the Tor network) can read all your traffic through their computer. Tor also hosts "hidden services", where the address ends in ".onion", where you won't know what IP address and/or where in the world the server is. Check Wikipedia for some of them. You could consider them "dark web" sites, though there are search engines such as Torgle or DuckDuckGo that do index the ones that want to be indexed.

Another network I've used is Freenet. It operates in a completely different manner from Tor, and is as close to a "cloud" as you can imagine. To participate, you have to install and constantly run the Freenet node software, and hopefully dedicate a substantial chunk of hard drive space to its cache. Your can access the network through a local web page, and whenever you click a link your computer will search your local cache and other people's caches until it can fully answer your request. Nobody, not even you, can tell what's in your cache. Its built-in "homepage" will take you to pages people maintain full of links to other Freenet pages. Pages that aren't requested often will eventually age out of everyone's cache and "fall off the network", but popular pages spread quickly and work fine. It's not reliable or fast, but it's like a giant free anonymous server.

I know of another network named i2p, but I haven't played with it. It seems to work kinda like Tor.

Problem with freenet is by creating a very powerful system of anonymity and being adamant about not censoring anything (the argument being "where do you draw the line") .. they've created an ideal system for some very disturbing people.

I haven't poked into freenet in a long time.. but when I did it was mostly very questionable porn (and I wasn't even specifically looking.. so I can only imagine what one would find if they actually poked around) and really out there conspiracy theories (we are talking hard core tinfoil hat guys).
