Thread: Whats your favorite lyric?

    Default Whats your favorite lyric?

Almost everyone has their favorite song. There is no doubt about that.

But what is your favorite lyric? and who was it written by?

    Personally, I have two..

"Sing for the kid with the phone who refuses to sing"
    and
"She's the kind of girl who gets her slings and arrows from the dumpster
The kind who tells you she's bipolar just to make you trust her"

Both were written by the amazing Amanda Palmer/The Dresden Dolls

Best lyricist overall would have to be Bruce Cockburn, the great Canadian troubadour - far too many to list.

Also up there is Derek W Dick, better known as Fish from the UK rock band Marillion. Every time I hear the lyric to "Sugar Mice" (on his last album with the band, 1987's Clutching at Straws, I feel a shiver up my spine:

I heard Sinatra calling me down through the floorboards
where you pay a quarter for a partnership in rhyme
to the jukebox crying in the corner
while the waitress is counting out the time

Whenever I hear this section of Hurt I start to get emotional, Trent Reznor is truly one of the greatest lyricists out there.

    What have I become,
    My sweetest friend?
    Everyone I know,
    Goes away in the end.
    You could have it all,
    My empire of dirt.
    I will let you down,
    I will make you hurt...

"I bet you fall in bed too easily
With the beautiful girls who are shyly brave
And you sell yourself as a man to save
But all the money in the world is not enough

I bet you've long since passed understanding
What it takes to be satisfied
You're like a vine that keeps climbing higher
But all the money in the world is not enough
And all the bridges blown away keep floating up"

    -Liz Phair, 6' 1"

    "Dark blue, dark blue
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room?
    When I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning and burning down
    Dark blue, dark blue
Have you ever been alone in a crowded room?
    Well, I'm here with you
I said the world could be burning till there's nothing but dark blue
    Just dark blue"

    -Jack's Mannequin, Dark Blue

I'm a bit bittersweet when it comes to lyrics. They all remind me of aspects of my life.

Oh, also 'Trouble is a Friend' by Lenka totally relates to me and the lyrics are kind of adorable in a way. It reminds me of a dark little girl whenever she says 'Trouble is a friend of mine'. Shivers...

I have a few. To narrow it down:

So society just can't let us be
Please don't be ashamed; we are not to blame
The future's ours to take. We will make mistakes
    Scream as loud and proud:
    We will not back down
    -Dignity, Bullet for my Valentine

Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I lived and you are gone.
    There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on, and on.
-Empty Chairs at Empty Tables by Marius, Les MisÚrables

There are others, but I don't want to overspam this. :/

Paul Simon ("Boy in the Bubble" - Graceland, 1986)

    It was a slow day
And the sun was beating on the soldiers by the side of the road
    There was a bright light
A shattering of shop windows the bomb in the baby carriage was wired to the radio

These are the days of miracle and wonder
This is a long distance call
The way the camera follows us in slo-mo
The way we look to us all
The way we look to a distant constellation that's dying in a corner of the sky
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don't cry baby, don't cry

    It was a dry wind
And it swept across the desert and it curled into the circle of birth
    And the dead sand
Falling on the children, the mothers and the fathers and the automatic earth

    It's a turn-around jump shot
    It's everybody jump start
It's every generation throws a hero up the pop charts
Medicine is magical and magical is art
Think of the boy in the bubble and the baby with the baboon heart

And I believe these are the days of lasers in the jungle
    Lasers in the jungle somewhere
    Staccato signals of constant information
A loose affiliation of millionaires and billionaires and babies
These are the days of miracle and wonder
This is a long distance call
The way the camera follows us in slo-mo
The way we look to us all
The way we look to a distant constellation that's dying in a corner of the sky
These are the days of miracle and wonder
And don't cry baby, don't cry.

There are just so many great lines in that song, most of which easily avoided becoming dated.

More recently, Radiohead (from "Iron Lung" - The Bends, 1995)

    suck, suck your teenage thumb
    toilet-trained and dumb
when the power runs out we'll just hum
this this is our new song
    just like the last one
    a total waste of time
    my iron lung

A brilliantly sarcastic (yet accurate) assessment of the whole grunge movement in general.

It's especially devastating when listening to Cash sing it. There's just something about that old, gravelly voice, that just shines like a neon billboard "I've lived this"....

To bring your heart back to my island as the sand beneath me slips

"Son do you know why I'm stoppin' you for?"
Cause I'm young and I'm black and my hats real low?
Do I look like a mind reader sir, I don't know
Am I under arrest or should I guess some mo'?
    "Well you was doin fifty-five in a fifty-fo' "

Epic. Now if only that son of a gun didn't drop 5 mil on a engagement ring, I might actually have some respect for him. Or perhaps I really just don't "understand the intelligence that Jay-Z has."

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle, gentle autumn rain.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep.
When you awake in the morning hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft, soft starlight,
    starlight at night.

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there. I do not sleep.
