They keep adding more and more cores, unless you're doing extensive virtualization or running insanely large amounts of applications/multithreaded applications there's no way to utilize that many physical cores!

Heh. Hell yes. I actually just "upgraded" to a triple core from a quad core on my desktop..
I see no negative effects of doing this either, mainly because Phenom x4 9600 was bottlenecking my entire system

Correct me if I am wrong here, but my understanding is such.
A processor with 10 cores at 1.3 gigahertz without software that can utilize the cores to spread the load is far inferior to a 3 gigahertz single core processor.

oh i see. what did you do with the phenom X4 after you taken it out?

    khaymen:
my educated guess is that it depends if the application can use all 10 cores or if it just uses one of them. if it uses the ten cores then it wouldn't be better but if it doesn't then the 3ghz single core would be better.

oops. i missed the part about the software. so you are correct.

Still have it. Put it in an old motherboard I had and put an HSF on it to keep it safe.

Plan on keeping it around to put in my server build - It may be a bottleneck on a gaming system but it will rock as a server chip

heh, I'm going to have to consider this now for my computer build. Considering what I am going to be doing.
