So what's everyone do for a living?

I work as a computer programmer. I mostly specialize in low-level optimization for either embedded systems or HPC simulation / modeling.

Machinist

I am also a machinist, work in a maintenance and support shop for a manufacturing plant, get to play with all the toys... milling machine, lathes, 5 axis cnc, grinding, EDM with all sorts of materials from cold roll steel, tool steels A2, A6, D2, (we do all our own hardening) aluminium, brass, bronze, plastics like delrin, peek, uhmw, nylon, teflon, phenolics just about anything.
We are a small shop of 5 guys we do mostly one offs very seldom do we do a run of more then 5 parts. Engineers send us a print and we make it. hold tolerances to .0001 to .0005 on lots of work. the most rewarding job I have ever had.

Awesome! That sounds alot like our shop. There are just 4 of us and we also mostly do one off jobs. I agree with how rewarding the job is. I’m still a young man, but I can’t see myself ever changing careers.

Plumber mostly, with some hvac and electrical thrown in for good measure.
Working maintenance can make for an interesting day.

I get to draw lines and circles for a living. Though if you really think about it, a circle is comprised of infinitely smaller lines. So I guess I just draw lines for a living.

Is your name a reference to steam piping?

Actually, more to a love of bringing old machinery back to service and using it for what it was built for.
Sadly, not much steam piping to work on these days in my area as the heating is all going to forced hot air and hydronic, and there's no active steam systems at work.

Entrepreneur. I have a diverse portfolio of vested interests in a couple small businesses. Graphics/ Hydrodip shop, Automotive Repossession contract that I sub out, and a trucking company.

Industrial maintenance mechanic. I'm stuck with that title and it's corresponding lower pay grade by lack of degree though after near thirty years with the company I am acting plant engineer. I order, rebuild, maintain, design and build production machinery as well as being responsible for facilities maintenance and repair. It's never boring, one minute I might be designing a new robot interface or digging a pit for a new 100 ton press and the next pulling a flushed maxi-pad out of the ladies toilet with a coat hanger.
