I've been giving this some thought. I would like to be in diapers more than undies. In fact I would just loss my undies if possible. I wouldn't want to loss all of my control or any of it if possible. The thickness of some diapers tend to worry me when it comes to public wearing, I know this is my choice in the end but would like advice and the wisdom of others in this
Keep in mind there is a nontrivial cost to that hobby, and there may be situations where you do not want to wear a diaper. There is also an issue of storage space, depending on how well-stocked you want to be. I went mostly 24/7 a few years ago and don't regret it at all. I'm not untrained, though there are specific times I tend to wet my diapers, like some afternoons around the time I'm getting off work, and I almost never wake up dry in the morning. I use the bathroom for #2 and for much of the day, and I find that's a good balance where I can enjoy my diapers without them becoming too much work or inconvenience. Kind of a "best of both worlds".
My "diaper therapy" has helped me (mostly) overcome my shy bladder, tough obviously I'm not using a stand-up urinal anymore
Most people experience no loss of control evern after years of wearing a lot, and I'm in that camp. If anything, I have
more control than I did before. If I get an urge, I briefly consider whether or not I want to wet my diaper, and if I do, then wet it gets. To improve my command over my bladder, I've tried to make the lag-time between the decision and the wetting be as short as possible. For example if I'm at home outside filing the birdbath and that triggers an urge, I expect to be able to start wetting my diaper before the birdbath is full, and finish somewhere during the walk back to the house. So for me, "diaper training" means being able to wet my diaper in any situation - something I can't say that I've mastered yet.
I'm still on the fence as to whether or not to throw away my regular underwear. I'll probably throw most of them away and keep a pair or two in some inconvenient location in case the need arises. On my last vacation, I made a point of not taking any underwear with me, assuring I would be "forced to wear diapers" all week. Even though I was 24/7 by then, that was still a fun angle to be getting dressed in the morning and looking in my suitcase and realize my nearest underwear were 300 miles away and so I had no choice but to put on a diaper. I made a point of wearing my thickest diapers for overnight while on vacation, to insure that a leak wasn't going to happen.
I also still retain full control overnight. I wake up every hour or so anyway, so if I have any bladder pressure at all, I wet my diaper and fall back asleep. So again this is pretty well in line with my "diaper training". (this also ha really improved my sleep) On the rare occasion I'm worried about a leak I'll get up and change, but fortunately that doesn't happen very often.
It's easier to wear 24/7 and be in public if your diaper is thin and dry, which is how I spend most of my days. I've tried many brands and my current favorite for comfort/cost/discreetness/availability is Tykables Little Builders. (purpose-designed for light duty/discreet wear-to-work/school) A case of 80 little builders worn one per weekday will last 16 weeks, or over 3 months. Their velcro makes them easy to remove and refasten for potty-breaks.
I'd also suggest you get a "go bag" (/bug-out bag) going for your vehicle. Find a discreet backpack with TWO large zipped compartments. In the front, a change or two of socks, tshirt, shorts, and maybe some deodorant and toothbrush/toothpaste makes a convincing "stranded bag". Put one thick and two thin diapers in the back compartment, along with whatever changing supplies you prefer and maybe some skin care. Put each diaper in its own 2gal ziploc freezer bag to protect it, and for sealed disposal if needed. Also include a non-transparent garbage bag (drum liners work well) and a few twist ties. Remove the pull from your diaper compartment, to make it difficult for anyone else to accidentally open. You can leave this in the car in case you need a change on the go or get stranded somewhere for a day or end up staying overnight somewhere unexpectedly. Or just grab your "overnight bag" if you are invited to join the posse unexpectedly and think you might need it where you're going. If anyone in your group questions it, pull out and show them your shirt or socks to demonstrate how smart you were to be prepared! (the shorts may also come in handy if you find you have leaked and need a quick change while at work or school for example) Northshore makes a really handy compact pouch of wipes too.
