Thread: Initiation day at High School

Default Initiation day at High School

I remember when I was still in Junior High School, which had 7th, 8th, and 9th grades at that time, seeing the sophomores at the High School next door coming to school on initiation day each year dressed as babies. This would have been back in 1972, '73, '74. Some of them took it to great extremes with what looked like real big diapers, a bonnet, bib, pacifier, and a bottle. Others just put on a diaper over the outside of their clothes for it. But this practice was stopped before I got to High School. I'm not sure why, probably because someone's parents complained that it was degrading to their little baby to dress like a baby. But I remember seeing all the big jocks and cheerleaders among others dressed like that several years on initiation day. Does anyone else remember having something like that at their school?

There were a tradition in my country where every year the fresh high school students used to dress up as something the elder students chose. One year they were assinged to dress as babies, another year as cows but the tradition was ended because of students being drunk and/or teasing and harrashing others.

"Initiation" at our high school (Arizona, early '90s) basically meant being up for general abuse.

"initiation" at my school meant being exposed to soft-core gay porn.

Hazing of any type is generally frowned upon in most schools these days. God knows we don't need more of these kids feeling that they get "picked on" too much and walking in with a gun.

I think the days of general "initiations" are over.

Yeah, I think that's why it was discontinued here too. But that's probably a good thing if you think about it. Depending on what the initiation is, it could have some serious detrimental effects on the "victims" of the initiation. It's unfortunate that people are like that, but if they weren't, we wouldn't be the way we are either.

Hey! There we go, that's it! The cure to this, or rather, the prevention. If it only worked that way.

I think that is (one of) the problem(s) with society today... Kids are growing up with a very thin skin.

No "initiation" or anything for me. Went to private school and was kicked out the spring of freshman year for "computer hacking" and charging to change grades (nothing like teachers keeping grades on Excel spreadsheets on an AppleTalk network ). I went back to public high school after April vacation and was back with my old friends, and the fact that I was a "hacker" garnered respect with a lot of them.

There was the threat of initiation when I was in grade 9, but nothing ever came of it.

I think any sort of initiation now would result in kids getting expelled, like Darkfinn said. We didn't have an official "initiation" but there were a few mumblings about stupid freshmen. There were a few myths older students liked to tell the freshmen, like that the class they were looking for was on the third floor (there wasn't one) or that you could get up there by taking the elevator (which you could get detention for unless you had a disability.) Or maybe the elusive class might be found near the entrance to the non-existent pool on the roof. I guess we were kind of lame.

It's about the same in my school. Initiation lasts all year, and EVERYONE takes advantage of the weak freshmen.
