All diapers include surge management pads along the center section. These absorb "surges" to keep them from going out the sides. They're like mulching for flowerbeds, keeping the fluid in place until it gets absorbed. They also provide a space for fluid to move when there is expansion and blockage, because the material has a natural sponge-like structure.

Anyway, the white vent register filters (4"x12") you can get are made of the same material. Inserting one of these in the mid section of a diaper can help avoid leakage around the legs, especially when sitting. If you put it overlapping the back panel, it can help move more fluid into it. Laying two together can help avoid bunching. Rinsing with water, squeezing out, then air drying is sufficient between uses (wetting only!). They last a long time if you are gentle with them.
