So I’ve experienced over the last week or so daily fecal incontinence. Once I feel my bowels moving The process has already began. It’s typically not a large BM but warrants a diaper change. I’ve already been diagnosed with urinate retention resulting in bladder incontinence. Can that lead to my issues now with bowel too? I’ve just gotten use to bladder and accepted diapers 24/7. Adding non fecal adds in a whole nother aspect.

if you stool is very soft - almost shapeless, then Fibercon can do wonders - it did for me, but I have to take 4 a day...

I'm kind of in the same boat as you recently, ehorton. Since going 24/7, I've had the occasional bout of fecal incontinence (once every few weeks) but nothing that really concerned me. Most of those were due to a sudden urge and not having enough time to remove my diaper. About a month ago, I was on an antibiotic that gave me diarrhea, so I pooped my diaper daily for a week - sometimes twice a day. Since then, it's been once a week, and I am starting to realize I have much less time to get to the bathroom than I used to. This morning, I got the urge, started heading to the toilet, coughed a couple times on the way, and there was no holding back. This leads me to wonder if I would benefit from pelvic floor therapy, as it seems everything down there is weakening.

So all this being said, I guess I wanted to let you know you are not alone, and I too wonder if there is a connection.

I am certain there's a connection. I have bowel issues very similar to my bladder issues, namely, retention. I have a BM about twice a week on average, and once it starts there's no stopping it, but I get a lot of warning (24 hours or so) and if I let nature take its course it would happen very, very slowly. I've learned certain ways of flexing my abdominal muscles to hurry it up, but typically I will leave it as late as possible before going to the toilet, and I always have enough time. Technically speaking, I am fecal incontinent as well but practically, because of the slowness of it all, it's extremely rare for me to actually have an accident.

Oddly, despite the slowness and the 2-BM-a-week, I'm never actually constipated. Also, even more curiously, I had similar bowel issues (but not urinary issues) as a child.

I too had major bowel retention issues as a child, to the point I was hospitalized. I often wonder if all my incontinence issues are related someway to that. I typically go a week or so between BMs prior to my recent accidents. Just trying to make sense of all this. Probably should call the dr to let them know of this new development.

Are you male or female? Do you feel you are regular otherwise?

I don't have retention but I do have bowel issues that are sporadic to say the least.

Male in my mid 30’s. No I would not consider myself to be regular when it come so to my bowels.

OK, male/female was just that had you been female, we'd have different issues with urine and fecal systems interacting with each other.

Anyhow, constipation is actaully the leading cause of encopresis (fecal incontinence). You should try addressing that (more fiber, less constipating foods,etc...) first to see if it helps. Things like laxitives, enemas, and suppositories should be the last resort, they can exacerbate the issues.

I have FI as well and really badly. Some people have worst cases than others and if it makes you feel better, I have to go about 5 times a day, and 5 again at night so it could have been worse :) Once I messed 8 times in once day and had to change 6 times

I'm the opposite of most of you, I have IBS wich causes urinary. But if I can control my IBS my urinary is minimal. I still wear every day because it's a lot easier for accidents.

fiber and diet can help a lot, stress and anxiety can also be a real trigger.

I had a flair up today, twice actually. First one was very unexpected. Fortunately it didn’t result in a blow out but it was that kind of bowel movement. The most recent was more solid. I felt it coming but couldn’t stop it before it started. I don’t understand why this is happening. I can live with the bladder incontitence as it’s not that difficult. Carry a spare diaper in my trunk. Bowel means a complete diaper bag. Wipes, cream, powder to help with the smell. I really hope the bowel is just flair ups and does not become a permanent thing.

I suffer from fecal issues and I have found a few things too really help

1. Diet, eating lots of fibre rich foods spinach/most fruits(whole form)/most veg and salad. Also keeps you generally healthy and weight down.

2. I only use laxatives etc as a last resort, mainly if I know I have something that day where I really really could do without the drama of dealing with the mess I will take that the night before, the downside to this is I generally have a soiled brief in the morning.

3. Obviously see your doctor, in the uk I have a specialist I talk too who gives me various options. I am following a exercise routine that does help a bit (strengthen the weakened muscles) however this is personal too you. But please see someone if you haven’t just too rule out other issues.
