Looking at this article, much of the situation could be viewed as connected with the autism spectrum. And in that case, I am reasonably certain that his needs could actually be medical in nature. Nobody bothers me over the fact that I wear them, except for some biological relatives, perhaps. If questioned, I would certainly give the medical response, and also the fact that I have visited many doctors who have prescribed the products. It is neurological in nature, whether his parents like it or not.
 
Of course the few comments that the article has are people saying “go see a psychologist”

Ah well, their loss. We (and there are clearly many of us) get great satisfaction from this world, we don't need those boring folk :) :)
