Simple homemade diapers

Recently I wanted to make a simple homemade diaper that would work. So I took a towel, folded it in half length (hamburger style) wise, then folded it into thirds, stuck it into my underwear and it worked. It got me thinking about what other people have tried. So, what have you guy's tried? How successful was it?

Towels in general make a decent emergency backup cloth diaper. You can also use a trash bag for the diaper cover. Just cut/tear open the bottom corners, and tuck them in under the towel.

Not a really good option, and prone to leaks, but better than nothing in an emergency situation.

Years and years ago, must be 30+ years since I remember making plastic pants out of a carrier bag with large sanatary pads stuck in.
They were never very successful, I eventually filled my nappy void with a trip to the petrol station on my bike petrified of being questioned....
