Would you recommend cloth or disposable to a beginner?

I haven't tried diapers so far (at all) - so, if I'd ever get round to it, what would you rather recommend:
Disposable or cloth ones?

From my subjective point of view, I'm not too keen on trying cloth ones so far, what with washing them and all... So in case I should try any, I'd probably grab some disposable ones. But I'm open to learn about the benefits of cloth ones (besides the obvious merit of being good for the natural environment, of course).

And what are the brands you'd personally recommend (considering disposable and cloth diapers) to a "layman" in terms of price-performance ratio, "Age Play-ability" and the like?

Disposable exist because of convenience. They were originally intended for families on vacation or out for the day etc where they didn't have access to their cloth diaper changing table etc. So that makes them the best starting point for a beginner. Cloth would probably be considered "pro-level" ABDL because of the additional investments. Cloth also has a bit of a startup cost and of course requires a bit more laundry access and time.

Cloth diapers are fine if you have access to private laundry facilities. They may not be what you are looking for if you want something easy as they do require more work. They can also add a bit of an atmosphere to wearing, as odors can be an issue even if they are washed in a timely fashion. Waterproof pants are also needed to prevent leaks. All-in-ones have their own issues as they are more difficult to dry.

Disposables are handy and the ones made for littles can add a fun look and feel to wearing them. As long as you have a place to dispose of them they are easier to deal with but there can be an added expense for the convenience.

i agree completely with bambinod.. while some of us are staunch supporters of cloth diapers and plastic or rubber panties, disposables are so much easier to obtain and initially cheaper, while cloth diapers are becoming almost a niche within a niche thing.

Cloth diapers in the long run are cheaper, but the upfront costs can be prohibitive. Not only will one quality cloth diaper cost you roughly what one 20 pack of moderately good disposables, but there is waterproof panties (PUL/plastic/rubber/latex), diaper pins, baby powder (required for latex or rubber panties) and of course the cost and effort of laundering.

The experience is not identical; disposables diapers tend to keep wetness away from your body, while cloth diapers do not; disposables get 'squishy' and swell up where cloth diapers tend to sag.

Cloth diapers i think in this day and age are much more an acquired taste, for those who really love to pour themselves into diapered life full bore. When i can wear cloth diapers, i love the sight of my diaper pail, i enjoy wash day especially if it is nice out and i can hang all my cloth diapers and plastic panties up outside to dry, i love learning new ways to fold my diapers.

For a beginner, I'd definitely recommend wearing disposables. They're just less work to take care of.

As for what kind of diapers I'd recommend, I personally like wearing incontinence diapers because they cost less than ABDL diapers and perform similarly. Northshore Supreme is my personal favorite diaper. But if you want something more babyish, Bambino and ABU are excellent places to look. I think you might be interested in ABU's one-tape-per-side diapers, which are Cushies, SDK, and Lavender, all of which have pretty adorable prints on them.
I don't really know how to get them in Europe, though...

I haven't found the Bambino and ABU you mentioned, but I've found a package of Tena Slip Maxi for a reasonable price in an online store. They look like the typical disposable diaper to me (as far as I can tell ) - would these be a good brand to start with, considering quality? Childish prints wouldn't be necessity for now.

Edit: Sorry, I've just found out that there already is a review of this specific brand on here. ^^ Sounds pretty good, I guess I'll give them a try.

If you're looking to try diapers, start with disposable, cloth is a big expense and something to consider if you like the experience and don't mind more work to save money in the long run.

I ordered those Tenas I mentioned before - they'll probably arrive during the following week, although I don't know when I will try them. I think I'll go get the ABU or Bambino later on, in case I like the experience. ^^ About me giving a report afterwards... um, dunno. Let's wait and see. XD

I also agree about starting with disposables unless you are strongly drawn to cloth.

I personally would like to always wear disposables but find they don't work for me at night.

It is good to start with some cheaper nappies like you are doing, as you are likely to make some mistakes at the beginning and waste a few nappies. You will also get a better feel for what works and what doesn't.

Yes wait a bit get comfy first and only get a kick out of what you do if you want to do it, not to please me or to experience what others do here.

You most likely want them for a reason, discover that reason without help (unless you ask for it) and then enjoy. For me it is a wonderful experience to wet in them and to do it in a place you never use a restroom. But I discovered the why for me is its like making a covenant. I was so into porn it was way too much for me, and this seems to find inner peace for me. Do not know why, but because I am wearing it I do not want to participate in porn, so I feel like I am rebirth and I guess subconciously I feel that its a chore normally to find a restroom to go, and with this I do not have to, although I learned that its not as easy to go outside the restroom as I now believe your subconcious mind controls your bladder muscle as when I sit off the toilet it won't come out even with a bladder full! I feel the urge to go, relax, and still it won't come out.

In your case you seem quite curious so you might want to try a good full padded one as you seem to have found one. And go do it when the time is right to first wear and go number one second when that time comes as well.

It's not sexual desire in my case (I'm pretty indifferent to that), but rather the curiosity and the comfort, like you've mentioned. I really like to be childish now and then and diapers are indeed a thing I'd like to try out for once (in private), not least because they are often associated with the "young and carefree" aspect, besides probably being a good excuse for not having to interrupt playing when nature calls, so to speak. XD (Although I'd refrain from "number two" for the time being.) Maybe I'll like it, maybe not - in the latter case I just won't try it again. ^^

There's a great selection nowadays in diapers, particularly in the AB arena. Too many to list easily really. Replica baby diapers, pastel prints, diaper tapes, diapers that flat out have BABY or "ABDL" printed on them or babies (typically furry) diapered on the panel. It's a great time to be an ABDL.

Born in the early 80s, being a 90s kid, I only knew about disposable diapers, and until the internet became mainstream, I didn't know of cloth diapers let alone ABDL. I didn't even bother with cloth much less think about it as an option until much later in life.

I do enjoy disposables because it's what I always knew and loved, but I had lingering thoughts that grew and eventually tried it and actually enjoyed it. They are different and both have their pros and cons. I'd suggest to try it at least a few times to get used to the different methods, requirements (trial and error) to make a decision if you like it or not.

I usually wear disposables first, but every now and then I do enjoy wearing cloth diapers because they have perks that disposables don't have. For example cloth diaper bulk doesn't give way like disposables do, you can walk(or waddle) and wet as much as you want and the bulk doesn't get pushed to other areas of the diaper like in a disposable. Another perk of having a cloth diaper around is for when you're broke and can't afford disposables. They are both very enjoyable choices and they both deserve a try.

I would start with disposables. Go with a Depend Fitted Brief Max Protection or the Attends with waistbands both are cheap and will give you the initiation to the Diaper world. Then of course as you get more and more comfortable with them you can start up gauging your diapers to Tena, Tranquillity, Abena Abri Form X-Plus M or L 4 Dry 24-7's, Northshore branded ones or even get bold and go with a DC Amor Pink diaper or the Blue Idyl ones for those special events or special days ..

Interesting, thanks for that information. I wasn't sure before, but this really reads like AB/DLism got into "mainstream" a bit, if one wants to call it that - or at least in the minds of some clever people in the industry for creating incontinence products. Although I'd bet a good deal of these people producing these diapers are in the scene themselves... I don't know. There definitely seem to be a lot of people buying these, so it at least gives a hunch about how large the scene really is. But I digress, this is another topic altogether. Sorry.

Thanks for your thorough reply. I can understand you - I wasn't born back in the eighties, so I too grew up with disposables; but, even though I have pretty detailed memories of my childhood, I can't really remember anything about the diapers. The only thing I can recall in relation to this is that there was a package of left over Pampers in my room - next to a wardrobe behind the door - until I was 5 or 6 (I was toilet-trained around 2 to 3 years old), but I didn't really care about that. My mother disposed of it when we moved to another apartment later on.

I will try to keep your explanation on my mind. Maybe I'll give cloth diapers a try after the disposables... if I can get used to these first, of course.

Thanks for your recommendation. I ordered a package of Tena that will probably arrive sometime around the coming week, so that brand will be the first one for me. ^^ But I'll remember the DC Amor Pink - they really look special.

I have to say that it probably easiest for you to start with disposable diapers but I grew up wanting them and didn't have any way to get them so I made my own cloth diapers out of towels and and old clothes when I did have a way I used disposable diapers for several years then I decided to go try cloth diapers that weren't homemade and fell in love with cloth flat diapers because I love using them and folding them is a challenge but it is fun
