I was just told by my sister that the IT teacher (the one I've been telling you about) threatened a class mate with the police for using Netflix.
Apparently Netflix is illegal, why the fuck isn't the guy fired yet?

Doubt the police will do anything, but I've heard stories that they have arrested people from doing something as simple as changing a wall paper, so.... who knows.

Edit...
What ended up happening was her friend was banned from the school network for a week.

Even if it was illegal, I don't think it would stop people from using it. But why would anyone get the idea that it would be illegal?

How is this man an IT Teacher?

Well the IT dude, is some guy in his 60s, with a PHD , so he thinks everything he thinks is correct, "he is one of those arrogant professors" who just refuse to accept anything even if there wrong.

Trust me, the amount of claims this guy makes, makes him sound like a snake oil salesperson.

List of claims this "snake oil salesperson makes"
1. Macs cannot get viruses.
2. OSX cannot run on PC hardware, even though there is a actual group dedicated to doing such, and is something I've done before.
3. Linux is illegal, and only used by hackers.
4. Tor is used by pedophiles...
5. Only UNI students code in binary, and that's the only language they use.
6. You can't learn programming properly until you do a degree in IT.
7. Thinks that everyone who makes a website will be rich.
8. All teenagers are stupid, and should be locked up, and don't forget teenagers don't know anything.

That's only a small list of the crap he thinks.

You get the basic gist of this guys logic.

Long story short, the proper IT teacher, who actually worked in IT for some time before becoming a teacher, got caught up in a cold case murder, so obviously he lost his job, (he got acquitted) It's a very complicated court case. can't say anymore about that otherwise it will identify who i am lol.

From what I got told, some school student made out he touched or hit her, so they did a DNA test, came back positive for that murder, and he was cleared of the assault, because the school student was talking shit, some people hated the teacher because he was "a bit harsh" to those who weren't doing there work, kind of valued intellectual thinking from what I gathered.

Really nice teacher though, in hot weather he would let us sit in class playing games, was going to move me up a grade because I was smarter than average, stuff like that. (I think the video tapes cleared him as well, can't remember the exact details as I'm not supposed to know this (practically was a "leak")

Was a bit of a surprise, because the police seized his server on the day, he had a custom built gaming server in his little office, so we can play minecraft on sometimes, can't remember what he ended up using it for though.

(Had to edit this, showed up on google search yikes)

Why are you letting his guy get to you. He seems like a moron. Take the lessons he has to teach, but take them with a grain of salt.

Well apart from being a moron the teacher sounds like a bully which should never be tolerated.

The person watching Netflix wasn't doing it during a class though were they? I would be pissed as the teacher if I encountered that sort of behaviour.

I have to say though if I was watching Netflix (which I have and pay for) and some twerp threatened me with it I would definitely be in the morons face to call his bluff.

Anyway in Australia police only exist to hand out speeding fines the lazy shits don't do anything else.

Yeah they were, though a proxy I assume.

I'm sick of this teacher giving people misinformation, might as well start telling people the world is 6000 years old, and that computers can fly.

When I was there, he didn't even understand that bit torrent is a legitimate program used by millions for legitimate purposes, I remember he was making us do assignments on how bittorrent is "illegal and bad for the entertainment industry" not realizing it's dual purpose technology, so obviously all the research was bias, because he was giving people a false impression, and bad examples to use, the list goes on and on. I actually wrote an unbias assignment, had to redo it because it didn't fit his "idea" of what BitTorrent technology. Even though I wrote a torrent scraper by scratch once, completely throw that out the window, it's not like I understand the technology :D (I once wrote a entire torrent site by scratch because I was bored) so yeah I've got a decent understanding of the entire protocol, enough to implement it at least. I was trying to come up with a solution to a problem I had, but ended up writing a torrent site (the scraper was written in python and used as a cgi script) wrote it by scratch for some reason, there was a good library for it, but didn't do what I wanted.

Better yet, "he was teaching us how bad hackers are" and went on about how there are only bad hackers, and they can launch nukes by whistling into a telephone, and that phone phreaking was still possible, it was hilarious, obviously I knew the reference, (Kevin Mitnick) but even than he couldn't actually whistle into the phone to set off nukes, it was just hype to get him a long prison term. This teacher is stupid.

So glad I don't go there anymore, he was teaching scratch and java-script, he couldn't even understand that java and java script aren't related or the same at all.

Must be some wierd laws in Oz. Only way I can think Netflix would be illegal would be using somebody else's account.

It's not, the teacher doesn't know shit, xD, thinks any form of streaming, or torrenting is illegal.

human stupidity has no limits whatsoever :eek!:
hopefully he retires early.

For the sake of argument, did you mean that the student was using Netflix on a school computer? It is somewhat different to be, say, at the library streaming video instead of studying (especially if there's a limited amount of computers and anybody else who wanted to do research had to wait) compared with simply using Netflix on one's home computer during free time. It's even possible, depending precisely on the school's computer use policy, that it could be technically illegal to use Netflix on a school computer do to the way that many nation's unauthorized computer access laws are worded. I'd have to look up Australia's law in that area and see the school's exact written rules to be able to tell for sure.

Netflix is NOT illegal. It is a paid subscription tv service, and is every bit as legal as comcast is.

Now watching Nexflix during a class or on a school computer will likely be against school policy (and could even get you expelled is done enough times). However, even this is not "illegal". To the best of my knowledge there are no laws preventing someone from watching tv. Only company/school policies.

It's a bit of a grey area, but the way he was saying it, made it seem like it was illegal to use all together.

because technically when a site isn't blocked, and you're not using a proxy, it's not breaking any of the rules, because the IT guys are generally idoits sometimes you have times where you can access facebook by typing https://m.facebook.com without even using a proxy.

The blocking policy there is practically a 5 year old protecting his toys, you aint getting what yah want with him lol....

The blocking policy is that bad, that it's a well known fact that 99% of the students use a proxy anyway, because practically the only thing unblocked was wikipedia, and there like oh it's blocked do the research at home, keep in mind not everyone has a internet connection at home, I'm a lucky few who has. so they rarely do anything about it, other than block them.

To give you an idea of how bad it is, this is a sample list of sites blocked.

Yahoo Answers, Google Images, (90% of wikipedia) and anything related to the school work you actually want to do, it was that bad you practically NEEDED a proxy to do your work, because teachers love to pull the, oh you can't use Wikipedia for research, practically rendering you unable to research anything at all, when that is practically the only thing unblocked, everything else is hit and miss, you got a 1 in 5 chance of it actually being unblocked. Wikihow, Youtube (90% of the time) though you can get your way around that by putting it into a html page, JB-HI-FI, list goes on and on.

One of my assignments in year 12 was to review and find cameras on the internet ahaha, it got to the point that I never actually finished the assignment and failed during a time my mother didn't pay the net, half the class struggled with it, because you guessed it, the sites you needed were BLOCKED. though weeks later the fucking sites were unblocked, how useless is that.

Meanwhile, a lot of porn sites haven't been blocked, and you can practically play games all day, but research baaa we will block that for shits and giggles.

Don't forget that time I had bing open doing research and got told off by this teacher for "playing games" or "that doesn't look like research" so wait I use a search engine you aren't familiar with, and I'm suddenly playing games, does this look like a game to you?

*Sigh* yes I use bing sometimes, google at the school is generally shit and bing just looks better, google at the school looks like its from 1995, plus images work, and I found a lot more information I needed.

The cool thing about my old IT teacher is, he knew this and often "turned a blind" eye when it came to proxies, only teacher who didn't dob you in for using one lol.

Even the USA Wikipedia page is blocked under "wiki",

Are you sure he wasn't saying that it was against school rules to bring Netflix up on a school computer? I did IT for a junior high school and students weren't allowed to access anything that was approved by IT or the teachers. Obviously, Netflix is a legal site for those who pay for it. My wife and I watch "Stranger Things" via Netflix on our home TV.

Nope, he clearly said, "get off that illegal site before I report you to the police", than went on a rant on how torrenting and streaming is illegal not realzing by his logic, anything such as youtube and twitch is illegal. well this is what I've been told.

the guy is a bloody idiot, so it's not something he isn't likely to say, he did say a similar thing when someone brought up spotify when I was in his class, I think it was spotify? (was on there own laptop and shit though, not connected to the network) went into detail on how spotify was illegal, guy is a fucking idiot.

Just image those creationists with PHDs in science, practically him in a nutshell. (except he hasn't got a PHD in computers or anything) unreleated, but loves to rub in he has a PHD whenever he has an arugment.

Oh the world is billions of years old, wrong it's 6000 I have a PHD.. literally sums up his arugments in a nutshell.

Or, oh you're a teen you don't understand the world, or stupid shit like that.

I should mention, he isn't just the IT teacher, he is also the Deputy Principal..... so yeah he ended up failing me for IT, because I didn't do things his way, quite funny.

On the bright side is, I know this is harsh, but the entire class didn't like him, and used to make jokes such as oh why the fuck is he two hours late, dunno must of got stuck in the doors of mcdonalds...

best of all, is even though I know how to code, he would always sit next to me in class, and "teach me how to code" oh I use a function to select audio files, oh WRONG you gotta do it the lame way where you use variables and not even do it properly to handle the right file types.

Don't you hate ten year.

I have to agree that your IT teacher is an idiot. I was an assistant to our IT head, I have to say, I was a lot more knowledgeable than your guy, and I was a lot nicer.

I think there is a place for computers and technology in junior high and high school, but I've observed that technology is often misused in school settings. I saw a lot of different math programs come and go, programs to make learning math easier and more understandable for students, and almost all of them were terrible. I had to teach some of them, and the horrible part was I'd start making fun of the video actors. The programs would make an attempt at humor and instead, it would be horrible lame, and of course, repetitious.

Most high level jobs demand proficiency with computers and technology, and schools should be preparing students to have knowledge in those areas, but I never saw that taught.

Maxx's comments about IT people teaching in college is absolutely accurate from what I've experienced. When I went back to school getting my certification in teaching, our IT teacher did almost no teaching. He apparently played in some lame folk band, and he spent most of the time on his laptop, looking up folk songs. At the time I was playing in a kick ass, cover band, making between $200 to $650 a night, depending on travel, so I had a right to judge....haha.

I'm confused, I thought Netflix was a legitimate site and if it were illegal, wouldn't it have shut down a long time ago? People pay for that service and they get all these "free" movies and TV shows but the service itself isn't free because it costs money to have a DVD plan and a streaming plan. We only have a Streaming plan because I don't watch much TV and kids don't need to watch a lot of TV so I got rid of the DVD plan. Even Netflix makes their own TV shows and have them Stream. Fuller House is one of them with is a Full House reboot but all the characters are grown and it's like the same thing again because DJ is living the same life her father lived and she has her sister come and live with her and her friend Kimmy except she has a daughter of her own while Jesse had no kids but had two of his own. And they live in the same house she grew up in.

Am I missing something here? Unless it was against school policy to do Netflix, then I understand why it would be "illegal." But if it was during break time or lunch period, that is stupid. During class I would understand. But what if the person had no school work to do because they were done with it, just as long as they used headphones, what is the harm?

Wow...Two pages on this sillyness. So yeah netflic is not illegal in any sense. The company buys licenses just like any TV channel and funds the ability to buy rights via thier subscriptions. As for this "professor" I guess he also thinks Steve Ballamar made Microsoft awesome and probably should be in a retirement home now.
